Got my MY00 Subaru at the weekend from a main franchised dealer. Had just been given its 30k service.

From the off though the brakes tend to squel under normal braking. Not sure if the brakes are new or old but would have expected them to have been fully checked. Is it just that the pads are made so hard to last longer or should I take it back to the garage?

Love the car but brakes are not what I expected and know these to be the case from previous posts. I am told everything on the car is standard.

The brakes should not squeell. My guess is that the previous owner trashed the pads and then got rid of the car, I reckon the pads have glazed over, therefore not only do they make a raquet(?) but they don't stop the car as well as they should.
See if you can get the dealer to change the pads for you, new ones should not make the noise, try to bad them in gently, don't expect miracles from subaru brakes at-all, they won't stop you repeatedly from high speed without scaring the living s*** out of you every now and then
Apart from that, ENJOY!
Ron.
