1509joe,Ive found 225/45/17 rub on a classic. Just changed to 215/40/17 and not had a problem.
This is on newage STI rims with coilovers on a 97 uk car.
However, the speedo reads about 8mph over the actual speed of the car(as checked by sat nav) but no rubbing

thanks
Dave

That's STI rims off a newage which have a different offset. ET46 opposed to ET53 on a classic. The newage WRX 5x100 rims are ET53. The STI rims are ET46 to clear Brembos hence why your STI rims rubbed because they are 7mm further out. The OP asked about classics

5x100pcd 2004 sti wheels 17x 7.5" et53 - clear Brembo's - it's the spoke shape, not the et.

P1 wheels were 18 x 7.5 et51 with 225/35 tyres - sometimes rub on stock arches.

Tyre widths aren't consistent between manufacturers. I'd stick to 215 max width. Unless you're going to run excessive camber?
