I Have a STI 3 & I am not 100% happy with the brakes. I have fitted drilled & grooved discs which have improved things very slightly although they are noisy when used heavily which I understand to be normal with drilled discs.
I was told the pads were one grade off track day pads although I seem to get a lot of dust.
The breaking does not give me a lot of confidence & an awful lot of pressure is reqd before the abs comes in if at all.

Firstly I am wondering if I have a problem that could be improved by different pads & with the excesive pressure reqd does that indicade possible master cylinder problems.

I have seen various threads re brake upgrade kits available but would like some advice on which are best & some idea of costs.
I may do the odd track day in the future but I am mainly looking for something to give better breaking for general & quick road driving
I am also keen to keep the standard 16 wheels

As always any costructive advice would be appreciated

If you haven't done so already, try bleeding all the brakes. Spongey brakes are often caused by air in the system, or old fluid.

One upgrade which improves brake pedal feel is fitting of braded hoses. Also, certain pads do not work effectively until warmed-up to temperature.

Which pads/discs are you using?

Dave,
Not sure whoose discs were fitted, took the car in with a cracked std disc & whilst it was in they said they could get "racing discs" for a few quid extra so I told them to go ahead. I will pop in next week & see if I can find out what they used. I put loads of heat into pads, did a 20 mile thrash last night with a couple of 120 (indicated) to zero stops, a slight improvement but nothing astounding but black wheels & they were clean when I went out so drilled & grooved discs are going unless anybody thinks a change of pads may help. If anybody has drilled & grooved discs & does not suffer massive dust problem can they let me know.
Does anybody have any advice they can give to my other querie re various upgrades available. I have seen some on the Scoobysport site, are they any good/value for money?

Are the STi brakes the same 304mm as the uk spec 2000MY with 16" wheels? I'm after something to increase my stopping power without going to a 17", but so far haven't found a disc that won't warp/crack. I spoke to a friend who I occasionally meet at the Nurburgring and he has an Sti (not sure what year) and he says it has the same calipers as the P1 and uses std 01MY pads!

Anyone who can shed some light would be appreciated!

just been put in contact with Godspeed. They do lower cost rotor/caliper upgrades for both 16"/17" wheels. I'm waiting for a response via email to see what he suggests I buy.

Anyone got any experience of their conversions on the track?

James

I'll try it again but if you don't get it ,

Hi James , We can help you out here , It's the heat generated that is
causing you the problems , We can offer you a thicker disc that can take
more heat , the standard discs are 24mm thick , but we can offer you a disc
and bell set up that is the same diameter as you have now but are 28mm thick
, the calipers will need spacing to allow the thicker discs to fit in them ,
We supply 4mm spacers to fit in between the caliper halves , the discs and
bells and caliper spacers are £425 plus delivery , I would recomend the
grooved only for track use .
Hope this helps , Ian

For Ian at Godspeed,
Will the 308 disks fit a 1999 scooby if the spacers are fitted to the standard calipers?

Crusher , If you retain the standard subaru four pot calipers you cannot fit the 308mm discs , If you go bigger in disc size the caliper has to come out far enough to fit a bracket , the calipers have to come out by about 20mm , this means the new disc size must be 40mm bigger than the originals , by going from the original 294mm to the 308mm is only 14mm bigger , so the calipers will only move out by 7mm which is not enough room to fit a bracket , but we also supply a 294mm disc and alloy bell set up , with 2 thickness discs , 22mm and 28mm , Hope this helps , Ian

Thanks Ian,that's very clear..is there any price difference between the different thickness disks?...which do you recommend..I presume the thicker disks take longer to overheat, but also longer to cool...do they have a longer life expectancy..ie increased wear limit before they need changing?

Crusher , The 22mm thick discs and bells are £350 a pair , and the 28mm discs and bells also come with 4mm caliper spacers to widen the calipers so you can fit the thickers discs in , the 28mm set up is £425 , the thicker discs are better for track use , They will wear at the same rate , but its the vent in the middle that makes them wider , the walls of the discs either side are the same thickness on the 22 or 28mm discs . If that makes sense . Hope this helps Ian

All I will say is the answer is "Godspeed" Went down Saturday & let Ian sort the car.
Refreshing to meet someone who knows their stuff & who as somebody else commented is refreshingly free of Bull ****.
Only done about 150 miles so still bedding in the discs but already the car feels significantly better, cant wait until I can give them a real test in about a weeks time.
