Sunaru Cup / Nippon car update
It’s coming up to 6 months ownership already!!! and to be honest I’ve not made as much progress as I would have liked, the intention had been to prepare and race the car in the 2010 Subaru Cup / Nippon Challenge, but a lack of funds as held back the project, business as been poor and I’ve yet to sell my TVR which was originally where the bulk of the money was coming from.
On a positive note I now have my base car up and running reliably so I don’t have to find the money to purchase a car so more money can be allocated to getting it competitive rather than just getting it on the grid.
The aim now is for a full season in 2011.
I haven’t totally idle over the last couple of months, I’ve done a bit of painting and added a few stickers so it is now at least starting to look like a race car.

I’ve also continued the lightening process, I’m now starting to feel the benefits of this its definitely feeling a little lighter on its feet. The battery cut off is now fitted which is one of the MSA race prep requirements, a FIA race seat, 6 point harness, roll cage and plumbed in fire system will follow when funds allow, these additions will complete the work needed to conform to MSA blue book regs.
In the mean time I’m going to continue going as much as I can with the limited funds currently available, a full poly re-bush is on the to-do list, along with a return to a stock air box (anyone got a O/E are box for a ’99 classic going spare?) Andy Carr reckoned a O/E airbox would be better than the K&N cone currently fitted, once the airbox is fitted I can get Andy to re-map it with some decent boost, at the moment it’s running a very conservative 10 psi via a dodgy bleed valve!!! The sooner I get rid of this method of boost control and get the 3 port solenoid mapped in the better.
As I said the mechanicals seem pretty good, the cheap ebay clutch is much better than I expected and as so far proved faultless, although whether it will cope once the engine is mapped only time will tell, the only problems are the turbo is a bit laggy, it doesn’t seem to spool up very quickly but I’m hoping Andy Carr will be able to improve this, the main problem I’ve got is a oil smell following a little spirited driving, I’m hoping it’s just a matter of fitting a catch tank stopping the oil vapour entering the induction system. So a little advice on my options re a catch tanks would be welcome, I’m going to try and get to the MMM so hopefully I can have a look at some oil catch tanks fitted.

yeah I'm registered on the 22B forum and it is a good source of info, although my favorite is the yank site NASIOC, some really good stuff on there
Re oil smell I've had a good look around the engine bay and I can't see any leaks, it's not smoking or obviously burning oil so I'm assuming it's a crankcase ventilation issue that a catch tank will sort out.
