Smile Exhausted looking for exhaust performance

hi all,

Ive got a backbox (jap angle) for my wrx 2009, but im looking for some minor upgrades before touching the engine, and ive seen adverts for up/down pipes/manifold pipes/centre pipes that are supposed to give a BHP increase from 17-25BHP for EACH part. Sounds very optimistic to me, but if I can get an extra 40-50BHP just for changing the exhaust piping, Im up for it.

Whats the truth behind this, will I get significant performance improvements and secondly, will my backbox sound "meaner" as a bonus and finally, how many hours work would it take to change all this over (so I can balance my budget when I work out how much a garage will sting me for it if I decide to fork out for it all?)

Thanks!!!!

Carl

Hi. The only real power increase would be de-cat downpipe and remap. You can't remove the cat in the downpipe without a remap. Not sure if the hatch has a cat in the up-pipe, if so de-cat that at the same time. Just changing the exhaust from the downpipe back doesn't give any real noticeable power increase, just the nice flat four burble.

Ta stu, you're a fountain of knowledge mate.

Will it affect MOT emissions testing?

I want to get an Accessport and they're about £450 from USA, but try and get one over here and they seem to be about £650.... I dont want to just get it remapped via a garage, otherwise if I add any further bits, I'll need another remap?

BTW, are you going this saturday on the convoy? Would be nice to meet you, you've given me some helpful tips so I'd like to buy you a pint as thanks.

Carl you are the first hatch in the club, there is a good friend of ours in Cumbrian Scoobs (his name is Rob Ostle and he can be found on here and on facebook) he has a very very nice hatch sti and he will advise you no end (proper nice chap), deffo worth picking his brain as the hatches are just slightly different (exhaust wise) to newages and classics......just a thought

do not spend any money until you have spoke to him and done some research

Yeah a full de-cat would effect emissions come mot time, all I do come mot time is replace the second cat which is after the downpipe and is easy to change over and as long as you get it nice and hot it will pass emissions.
Yeah will be at the convoy on Sunday for the meet.

Or you could go sports cat downpipe, most will pass emmissions test. Just keep away from eBay cheap sh*t. Would still need a remap with sports cat.

ive posted this in general, but thought I would post in here as well, just to close off the thread.

Rob recommended a Haywayd & Scott down pipe decat and centre pipe decat. I ordered it yesterday, it turned up TODAY. My local garage was quiet so they fitted it in 35 mins (3 of them working on it).

IT SOUNDS AMAZING. Loud as effing hell, though now its decatted, I will hang onto the down pipe with the cat on and change it on MOT, wont cost a lot, maybe a ten or fifteen quid but is WELL WORTH IT. I was THAT impressed, I rang up H&S and THANKED them on the phone coz it sounded soooooo good.

They do sound good decatted
But don't get giving it to much boost as the decat downpipe can cause it to overboost until you've got it remapped and you don't want to **** your engine up.
