Default Number plates, yes or no????

What's the general feeling about listing full number plates on here?

I've seen both full and censored number plates.

Generally regarded as a no no, although there are some who don't mind.

i agree, wouldnt want my full number plate posted. Easy to find car if you have the contacts, also on the DVLA site if you have the full number plate and the make of car you can check the age of a car (on a private plate) also if it is taxed and the last change of owner. Doesnt give you address details or anything but you can get some information.

Give it a go on your details if you dont believe me, and anyone can do it!!

Yeah but, no but.. Why hide it here when its visible on your car (front and back) against a high visibility background to anyone with eyes? Doesn't make sense.

I've never understood why you would hide your reg number in a photo when it's clearly visible to the general public when you drive around in your car. It doesn't make any sense to me. Is there something I'm missing? Is there something a mallicious internet user can do that the guy on the road can't? I doubt it.
No picture of my car has ever been on the internet but I'd certainly not object to the number being displayed. On the contrary I'd make sure it is displayed.
Magazines regularly feature their readers cars, and most of them show the reg number on them. So I reckon it must be something specific to forum users.

Oh, I think I've got it now. Maybe the owners are too embarrassed in case somebody recognises them.

Default because there's thiefs

It is purely because there are people out there who steal car ID's, and if you wanted a Scooby ID where would you look?, they take your Reg stick it on an identical car, drive around without a care in the world through cameras etc. they don't care, you'll get the fine, how can say it wasn't you, it'll be in theory you car, any police check will confirm colour make model etc. [unless they physically pull the car over] you'll get the fine and no way out of it.

And as for taking a photo infront of a reflective background and only blocking your plate out, well that's just daft.

and personally i'd prefer someone didn't list my full plate.

But the numbers on your car.........twice....... thats the bit I don't understand. Personal preference is fine but the reasoning behind I just don't get.

Whenever I have posted up in here I have always left the number plate off out of courtesy but I come back to the main point - why when the number is visible to everyone who looks at your car.

Crikey, this must be my first post for months. I think Swen6 touched on the right idea when he mentioned car identification theft. It does seem a bit silly masking out registration details but I suppose we could look at it as 'damage limitation'. If a thief wanted to steal an alternative reg for an Impreza in readiness for a bank job, he'd have more luck if he searched here. It'd also be a lot easier to do than stand by the road-side waiting for a Scoob to drive passed that was the same colour, for example. Not a great example but I'm sure you get the idea.

Personally I don't mind my reg being displayed... else I'd be paintbrushing my Impreza pink, adding blue wheels, and giving myself red-tinted glass if I was that worried.

Jonts.

Agreed that your car details are on show as you drive local (mostly) but the audience here is Nation wide..

Much easier for Mr or Mrs Scum to pop on here and get all the details they need easily to hand.. the chance of them owning a particular make, model & colour of scoob and waiting for you to drive past with exactly the same car is going to be slight..

Just cuts the odds down..

I disagree ! We all post where we are having meets so what stops Johnny Robber popping along to have a look in the carpark to see what car he will nick after he has followed you home ???? You don't think that johnny robber wakes up one morning and thinks "today" I'm gonna do a bank do you ? I'll wait by the A1 for a scooby to pass with a reg i can nick? Now i have nicked his car! He will plan it to perfection and already got the reg plates in the car park, these guys are'nt numptys you know ! 15 years in Armley is a heavy price for getting it wrong.

Why lock your doors if the scum can just break in?

Removing number plates just reduces the chance of the plate being cloned etc.

Nothing stops them.... The point I was making is removing your plates on here cuts the odds down of someone National taking your car details and nicking a similar car and adding your plates.. It's unlikely that Johnny Robber will travel from Yorkshire to an ESC meet just to get a car plate when he can get it from here..

Quality quote from Swen

i have put pics of my car and do not cover the number plates. not to worried about being cloned as i have a tracker fitted. so i can prove the real car is somewhere else.

Good point! I hadn't considered using the Tracker in that circumstance...
