Is it a common thing for 22B's to go bang when doing high speeds for a long distance, when I went to TSL about 5months ago there was a 22b in there that had the same problem. Still bloody nice car though.

AFIK it's common for all scoobs, not just 22b's. Avoid high speed runs for long distances under heavy loads.

I seem to recall most cars this has happend to have been doing 120+. If you do a search you'll find a thread which outlines it all. It was 3-4 years ago if I remember rightly.

Remember the only time I got full red knock activity on my knocklink was when doing about 155mph on a private road with no cars about.

Your not to blame in any way, why??? Does it say in the manual not to do that?
Everyone seems quick to concede guilt in these things but don't forget how much a 22B cost when new. I would be livid but there's nothing you can do about it.

Seems to me to can rag these cars and they blow up. You can also pamper it and do oil changes every farts end and they still blow up!

I just hope someone in the states sues Subaru for defective product or whatever and then they start building much more reliable engines.

Well in that case Subaru should have only produced the car with 2 seats.

Can someone just remind me what the legal speed limit on a motorway is in this country?

Is it 70 mph or about twice that? I can't quite recall.

I can't see how the 70mph speed limit correlates to a blown engine?

It seems to me that people might not be experiencing so many blown engines if they weren't thrashing the bollocks off their cars for hundreds of miles at approaching twice the UK speed limit... or in AJF's case 30mph over the limit at 100 mph. If you're doing that speed, four up, uphill, with the scoob's fabled awd transmission losses for a long distance, then it seems to me that you're putting an intolerable strain upon a car that is not designed to be a 155 mph uber-cruiser.

If he has been doing twice the legal speed limit (or even 40% over legal limit) for hudndreds of miles then fair does.

In this country though I take my hat off to anyone to have the ***** to cover that distance at that speed without being stopped by police!

not to worried about speed petrols as im not using a uk driving licesne. totally agree i never speed in built up areas or near schools but motorways are upto the driver in my eyes
so stop moaning that i was doing 100 or 155 it dont matter unless you can tell me you have never done more than 70 on the motorway

For once, I'm not having a go at you speeding, I'm just pointing out that going at very high speed for long distances isn't really what the car's designed to do. Of course I do more than 70 on the motorway. Personally, I'm a bit of a wuss anyway and I don't go over 100 simply because I don't like it. I prefer the quickness of the car around the smaller roads near my house. And it's quick enough for me because, as I've said many times, I'm a rubbish driver.

I'm sorry about your car AJF, and I hope you get it sorted. You've recognised that you were caning the car a bit hard and fair play to you for holding your hands up to it, although if it counts for anything I think that you were extremely unlucky for it to have let go like that. You weren't exactly breaking the sound barrier, were you?
I personally don't feel the allure of attaining maximum speed (Gromit) and I can't understand people who do, but I fear scoob engines will continue to go pop whilever their owners do it.

Adrian,

keep it standard geometry otherwis eyou will hamr the value.

I would find yourself an ej22T get some decent rods and a copy of the standard pistons (JE make them) and put it back together as is. That way it will happily run on an unmodified standard ecu, but is more than capable of some fantastic performance.

Mine let go also on the M25 and I was contemplating the same thing. There is no question that that is the route I hould have taken, but i have learned the expensive way.

If you need help, give me a shout. Am always on 22b.com
