Cheers guys,
yep, my run of ****e luck over the last 6 months continues. was just looking over my shoulder to move into the right hand lane when (according to the van driver) someone braked suddenly in front of him, forcing him to break suddenly.
of course i looked back round to find a pair of green Nottm City Council van doors approaching the front of my car at 30+ mph and I had no where to go! and all this in the space of what, a second, maybe less? fortunately i had enough time to brake and as the car nose dived it bore most of the impact high up (so hopefuly no suspension/chassis damage).
another blessing is that my new engine looks to have avoided any serious damage - think i lost the power steering belt and bent the protective plate that goes around the aircon compressor.
fortunately, it didn't ruin my weekend in Newcastle as i was able to leave the car at my old workplace and it was collected by Scoobyclinic who also made a courtesy car available on the same day - again i have to say, given my bad experiences this year that Scoobyclinic definitely excel where numerous other garages/specialists don't!
Thanks for the sympathies - still
Kev
