It may start but I wouldn't recommend it as you could caused more damage, and if the valve stem breaks, you'll have a nice bill to sort it. Mine run with a hole in the exhaust valve. The engine shook violently, and didn't sound smooth.

I notest there was a tapping noise coming from the left head when i started it yesterday. The reason i am asking about the valves is, a couple of weeks ago, 2 bolts which hold the housing for the cambelt tensionor sheered of and i was wandering if the belt had jumped when it lost the tension, putting the timing out and then bending a valve. The engine doesn't shake violently just got the tapping noise.

Do a compression check.

But in answer to your question, yes it will start but it would sound like its missing slightly.

Default 98 Impreza RS

I just bought a 98 Subaru Impreza RS and it has a bent valve in the second cylinder (all the cylinders get a compassion of about 170psi and #2 only gets 25psi) which causes it to idle rough and make the engine shake but what I'm doing to fix it is pretty cool I'm just pulling it out while it's in the car. Good luck though
