Default Major Engine failure today.............

Hi All - the beloved Scoob let go "bug" time this morning, en-route to work, a loss of power followed by a thud, a pop and a metallic flutterring, plenty of smoke and an oil covered bonnet

RAC attend and with his torch we can see a hole in the block Shipped the car to Dave Coe's and confirms the Main bearing looks to have gone, causing the Rod to hammer it's way out the block.

Not a good time as it's only the Kidney's of kids I've got to sell

The engine was a standard WRX JDM with AVCS heads, Sti pinks and Sti I/C - with the Bob Rawle Re-map.

DC got an Sti engine there - 2,600 fitted or 2k for the engine alone

I assume my AVCS heads are now shot through - so what option have I got, I'll need something with the AVCS fitted - such as the Sti engine

What the FOOOK can I do

Can Dave vouch that the engine is good and ready to go straight in? 600 quid is not bad for fitting, is this plus VAT though as Dave's prices are all ex-Vat.

Hi Rich, apparently the engine is from a Cutomers car, he bought rear ended, I think but had a crumpled floor, so DC decided to break, he tells me there's 50k on the engine with full service history, I didn't ask if it's JDM or UK spec though - although he did think it would be a straight swap, using my bits that were Ok - No Turbo for this price though, would need to use mine or upgrade later on ! ! I think it does include the VAT as he said 400 for fitting first, then the VAT added price after.......

AVCS would be OK for my Map too ???

It is - but the only price I've had so far, 2k just for the STi lump - an upgrade though

As said earlier to you, it'll be worth calling a few specialists such as API, Engine Tuner and the like to get their take on things. When my car's previous owner had a similar experience, he went to Zen for a forged build that cost 4.2k!

If you are going to keep the car long term and planning future mods then now is the time to dig even deeper and build an engine that's going to last. Easy for me to say as I'm not spending the £'s.

If there is anything I can do, you know where I am, even if it's a lift to Tesco's etc just let me know.

Keep us updated on progress though Simon. Be good to know what sort of advice your getting etc.

For Dave Coe's prices £600 aint bad.

Si, I would take account for a remap in your sums. The remap you had would have been specific for your block, I wouldn't take the risk of running the new block with a map for the old one.

it's a bad feeling and I've been there, I had to fork out £3.600 on an engine just after I bought the car.

Have a chat with david @ API before you do anything, You might be surprised at the cost of a rebuild (New block needed/2nd hand one(go for CDB if you are)) that comes with a warranty compared to a used engine with very little history/warranty.

The heads you won't know about until you split the block

sorry to here this mate, would be a good idea to take your old engine apart to see the damage first as the heads could be very little damage but needs to be stripped down first
you will then know what direction to take and where you can save money

is it 2.0 ltr ? or 2.5 ?

It took me ages to decide what to do with mine!! Would the Auto box be compatible with the STi engine?

Thanks Dean - I will try and ring around to-morrow, probably feeling it as the car is in DC's now......

TBH Mate - I won't be on the BIG power search, although that would be nice but need to dial in the Auto Box and get a ssfe power output for that.

A good safe 350 would be good if I had the Sti engine, with a map tweek at Bob's, I was going to keep the car, as you know, it took ages to find it, unless I save big time for a Hatch JDM Sti A-LINE

My Map was running the AVCS, on this one, so it would make sense if it would run the AVCS on an STi lump

Cheers Rich - I guess I won't have to pay the full price again, just for the Tweek

Wow thats alot to shell out, when you had just had it - was that for a standard Sti or was it modded ?

I just had a thought similar to Mervil's, would the engine ecu ( as it is different to a manual ) be compatible to an STi engine?

As has already been said it would be worth contacting several engine builders to get an idea of costs.

Sorry I couldn't do more to help earlier today Simon but hope it all ends for the better.

Gutting isn't it you are right there - you never know what state the other bits are in, DC reckons from the look of it - that it was a good job and the unit is fooked, obviously, would take time for him to strip the engine to know what can be saved officially !!

Would this extra time etc be better spent on replacing the engine as he suggests

It's a 2.0 ltr JDM with AVCS fitted as standard.

Feel for you, been there and worn the t-shirt on a few occasions. Scoobyteknix have been there for me in the past. Might be worth a phone call (Andy or Brian). http://www.scoobyteknixuk.com/usedbreakingcars.html

I did mention that it had a std AVCS setup like an Sti - DC seemed to think that was good news - might be worth an e-mail to Bob too, to see if the ECU would be OK.

Cheers Tyron, for pointers this morning - I got onto you, Dean and Rich - I was sitting there thinking what the **** am I gonna do with this the Tea and sympathy was worth the world too

Like I said on the texts this morning just let me know what I can do to help, no matter how small it may seem.

I would want a longer warranty on the engine that DC had offered and remember to take back the old engine back with you as if anything can be salvaged ie injectors, head and anything else salvageable can be sold on by you to help with costs.

Ty ... just had a very quick look at ebay - some Sti engines in there ranging from 1.5k to 3.5k with a couple around the 2-2.5 mark.....as said it will need to work with the Auto and map for the heads

I'd take advice from Someone like Api first as your running an Auto where things might be slightly different.

2.5k for a Sti long block and £400 fitted isn't bad price, as long as this includes a 6 months warranty. Best of luck
