Vaughan Fletcher: No:15 GT300 Subaru Silverstone Launch Day 4th March 2010
Well, the day we’ve all been waiting for since last October was now here! The 4th March was to be the start of the 2010 season of the Nippon Challenge in earnest.
After finally getting on track at Cadwell the previous weekend, we were confident that the car was ready to go. A quick oil change and some new front brakes were all that was required before being loaded for the trip to Silverstone.
By the time we arrived at 8am, there was already a lot of activity in the paddock, and Vaughan had made camp in the pit used by “Red Bull” at last years British Grand Prix.
The day started cold, but there was a promise of a nice day ahead, and given the weather we have been having of late, it was good news.
In our garage were Pierrot with his lovely turned out Teg, Kieron with his CRX and a Triton Motorsport prepared STi. Kieron looked to have some mechanical issues towards the end of the day, but hopefully nothing too serious?
The STi is being run in the modified “up to 300bhp” Subaru Cup, and early indications showed it was working well. However as they did some shake down laps, leaking dampers meant an early bath for these guys, but I’m sure we’ll see it out again during the season.
It was nice to see some familiar faces, and those new to the 2010 season. With @50 cars in attendance, it was looking like it’d be a good day, with plenty of time in between rounds to do any necessary changes etc.
Vaughan was running in group A, and was joined by the likes of Steve Burke and Jim B in their 350z’s, Simon Deaton in his Pink Seat Leon, the Cup cars of Karen, Adrian and Darren who this year is running Alix Thompson’s 2009 car.
The Ex Matt Neal 2004 BTCC wining Honda Civic Type R (prepared by Richard Bulmer at Tracktive Solutions) was also in attendance.
The fresh GT150 Hyundai Coupe of Stuart & his Myerscough College students was taking its firsts steps onto the circuit. Looking very clean and running well all day long, it looks like it could take the challenge to the MR2 crowd.
There was an air of excitement as this was the first step in the 2010 calendar, and we’d soon be racing for real in a little over a month.
With the drivers briefing over, everyone assembled to go out on track. During the first session it was a shame to see Roger in his CRX sidelined with his ignition problem. Hopefully something that can be resolved before Mallory.
Andy was screaming around the track in his Swift, but it looked to retire early from the rest of the day’s events.
It was always intended that the day be about Vaughan ensuring that the car was “Race fit” and all looks to be fine.
Apart from adjusting the driver’s seat, and rotating the tyres to even out the wear, little else was needed.
Overall an excellent day appeared to be had by all, and it looks like the 2010 season of the Nippon Challenge will be one to enjoy.
