Default Removing coilovers to fit struts on a classic - Yes you did read that right ! lol

Please excuse the sarcasm all... I'm at the end of my wick and I haven't got a lot of patients to start with.

I'm changing my coilovers to standard struts because the rears are leaking.

So off come the coilovers all great so far

Then when it comes to re-fitting the standard struts they won't fit on. Now I am no divvy and I have attempted to fit the right ones, but do you think I could get them to fit. Bloody pig

The coilovers are upto 6 inches shorter in body length. When I tried to line the struts up they were knocking against the trailing arm and wouldn't line up behind the hub or fit into the top mount.

I wouldn't have thought I would have to take off anything else to fit them, like lateral arms etc. Just Bolt off / Bolt on

Is there something I'm doing wrong or is there a knack to it ?

Cheers
Phil

Pictures would say a lot more and save a lot of questions and time.
So you are fitting standard struts and standard springs.

Didn't take any pictures. Wish I'd thought of that was too busy swearing trying to work out why.

Yes I am fitting standard struts and springs

The strut is too long to fit in top mount and line up with hub

It's easy enough when your fitting lower suspension because you can just jack up the hub to meet the hub

Okay, you will need to lever the hub down for it to fit to the strut or use spring compressors to compress the spring so you can push the strut up to get it too bolt to the hub with the top mount bolted in place.

You need to get a steel bar in and lever it down so you can get the bolts into the bottom of the strut. I got a mate to put his foot on it whilst i got the bolts in. I pulled them off about a week later as they were too bouncy and the handling just wasnt right for 400 brake in a classic. Ive got bc's on now, Their great and not too hard on the soft setting either.
