Default Damage to Shock Insert, Problem?

Hi All,
I recently aquired some "spare" shock absorbers and Prodrive springs for my 2005 STi. My plan is to perform the "nipple" mod on the spares, then swap them over for my existing clunky ones at a convenient time rather than trying to refurb my shocks whilst the car is up on stands, rushing the job to get it all assembled again.

I've dismantled the first shock, and I've found some notches/scratches taken out of the silvery insert to the shock absorber as pictured here:

I'm not sure on the cause of these, maybe molegrips when somebody has tried to dismantle them in the past(?) but I don't want to spend time cleaning, drilling and greasing this strut if the notches/scratches are going to be detrimental to the performance of the shock absorber.

Can anyone comment as to the likelihood of this causing me issues?

IMHO damage that close to the seals is bad news.
