Guys

Had my car back to the dealers yesterday to have the suspension rattling/clunking noise checked out.

They then noticed that the left rear is roughly 1 quarter inch lower than the other side. This is the difference was measured from the centre of the wheel to the lip of the wheel arch.

They contacted subaru, and someone told them that the cars leave the factory within a 12mm tolerance.

The dealer isn't a bit happy with this and is investigating this further together with the noise from the suspension next week.

The dealer also said to me that its unlikely to be the shock, as these rarely give problem, but suspects its more likely to be mounting problems.

Does anyone else have this or noticed this.

What about those that have had the shock changed, did it actually clear the problem.

Haven't checked ride heights, but I know quite a few STi's up here now with the same knocking noise from the left rear suspension.

Doesn't seem to be affecting the handling at the moment, but the noise is getting louder.

John

I've now 900 odd miles on the car, and the noise is definately getting louder.
I have'nt noticed any handling problems yet, but the noise is really annoying. Hopefully next week the dealer will discover the cause.
I know he will get to the bottom if it as he is a friend of the family etc.

One week from now, and my noise will be discovered!

Hi Andy

Probably not, sorry for not replying sooner, but I have been working in London for the past week, and the chances are I will be over there again when the Mondello trackday is on.

Hows the car going - good I hope, have you had it out on the track yet?

Very Well indeed (apart from getting it keyed) and yes at kirkiston, it was an awesome bit of fun! A serious step up from the RB5 on track

Yeah Ive noticed a knock from the left rear. Was going to check it out as I thought it could be the jack had worked loose ans was knocking the panels. Will investigate further now.

Chip.

concerning the ride height:
the left side usually is a couple of mm's lower up to some 3 or 4 mm's. It's furthermore very important to check if the car is on a level surface, this has a major influence. Also check if you have additional weight in the boot.

Question

rovo, why is this?
My car is the same: about 4mm lower left rear than right rear.
Could this be the cause of the knocking sound?
How can I rectify this?
It is driving me crazy!

Had a look at the top nuts on the left rear damper last night, and they seem to be very tight. Didn't really know what to look for, though...

Had mine suspension replace a couple of weeks ago by Bilstein PSS9. Then I noticed the difference in ride height left to right of appr 3 mm's. The dealer told me this was normal, apperently a little more weight rests on the left side of the car.

If I am not mistaken the mounting points of the differential can sometimes be a cause of a knocking sound, that is if I am not mistaken. I believe the dealer from "urban" also mentioned this.

If the drivers side of the car is slightly higher than the passenger side, what happens to the ride height when the driver gets in? ie does it level out.

Urban I haven't noticed anything at all wrong with mine, might get the tape measure out.

Which dealer?
Mail me offline if you prefer?
I got mine in Donnellys on the Boucher RD 2 months ago and I am still being impressed by it, the Handling + road holding are a league above my old RB5.

The Irish Subaru Drivers Club is having a trackday at mondello on the Fri 24th, you would be more than welcome. you don't need to take the car on track!
