Been looking at getting my mechanic to do this after some research on SN. What I have not been able to collect is the time it takes so your posts is most helpful. Cheers mate!

I reckon garage would do it in less than 3 hours tbh never as quick on the drive sat on your ****
I should offer to do it for peeps could make some money would be interested to see how much you get quoted to do the job

Richie, seriously I actually wouldn't mind earning some extra pennies to help with all the money I'm spending on the scooby Time is always a problem though
Not much OE grease in there to start with is there?
Glad it's sorted the knocking for you. Did you use the grease nipple and 'pack' more grease in?
The grease that was in there was rock hard and wasn't touching the shaft at all. The grease nipples will allow me to top up the grease if it starts knocking again without having to strip to strut again2 minute job!
I think many would appreciate a guide for this. How does the handling compare before and after?
I'd say there is a marked difference with the handling, it used to stick with one side or other in the air sometimes on the drive. So how the shock absorber was working whilst going alone god knows.
The rear end is working like it should, good damping and no noise
One of the best DIY results I've had so well pleased, recommend anyone with inverted STI/WRX suspension should do this. Everyone was telling me the shocks would be knackered but they were absolutely fine, so saved a small fortune
Terry mate, in all seriousness I'd be happy to pay you to do it if you have the right tools etc. PM me if you're interested, otherwise I'll try and get a local firm to have a look.

good lad looks like some nice work and good link to a nice video. Mine have been knocking for a while now so hope they are not too scored. Worth a try before splashing out for new units that will ultimately fail the same way.
finally got off my a**e and did the strip/clean/grease nipple thing on my 57 plate STi. been knocking for 3 months.
Nothing difficult- about 3 1/2 hrs inc brews. nitrile gloves were handy to avoid getting sh**e all over the interior.
Marvellous difference- no noise and I had forgotten just how much better the rear tyres used to grip...
Definitely one of the best (cost effective & satisfying) bits of DIY in a long while.
BTW while they are off, unblock the drain holes in the spring cup- I suspect they are part of the problem with water/silt getting past the seals. Fot that matter clear 'em with a screwy on the drive twice a year when you're cleaning out underneath...
Totally stripped the rear suspension, cleaned, regreased and fitted grease nipples and filled with more grease. Knocking totally gone
Job took 3 hours but was fairly easy
hello kind Sir, may I ask if you can do mine. i have had nothing but trouble since car lowered on Eibach springs. kept stock factory shockers.
drive a 2005 Newage WRX blobeye.
rears knock so much, noticeable low speed or slowing down, or setting off, its a pain.

Did you have the shocks powdercoated and what paint code did you use?
They look better than new!
I used 2 pack out of a spray can only problem is you need to use the paint within 12 hours of it being mixed but a lot better quality than powder coat or the usual spray cans
