Default 2006 wrx rear shocks

Hi all,

My wrx has developed the all to common knock from the rear shocks. I really don't want to fit coilovers if I can get away with it as its the daily driver..

Are there any alternatives to the oe kyb shocks? as I don't really want to fit them for it just to happen again! Has anyone repacked the shockers and had good results?

any advice or pointers to suppliers would be greatly appreciated

cheers
Sunny

I'm just in the process after a month of research and buying parts of getting new suspension fitted to my 2005 WRX.

The 2005 and 2006 WRX's do indeed have the "Sti type" inverted shocks, and they fail in exactly the same way as the Sti shocks have been failing since 2001.

I am fitting "standard" non inverted 2001-2004 spec KYB Exgel G shocks, along with Eibach Pro-R springs to my 2005 Wagon, hopefully at the end of the week. There are some issues with compatability of the rear top mount (apparently, not confirmed) but I also have had 3 people who know their stuff confirm to me that you can fit 2001-2004 spec WRX parts directly to 2005> spec WRX's without issue.

Build a complete 2001-2004 spec Strut and it will bolt directly to your car. Front top mounts are fine, and the only issue is that the union of the rear top mount and the damper rod appears to have changed at some point in 2004 so that needs to be correct. If you use a 2001-2004 spec Rear WRX top mount, you have no issue, it bolts directly to the car.

Total cost was about £340 for the 4 shocks, £220 for the springs, I've spent £40 on Eibach Camber bolts and it's being fitted and aligned for £300 by Rich @ FB tuning. I got help from the garage I bought my car off, they paid for the shocks.

Yes I have a hawk WRX and was in the same situation. I was gonna change to coilovers but drove a friends and to be honest using as a daily driver it would of done my head in particularly speed ramps etc.
I bought some uprated kyb ulta golds from camskill. I fitted these last week and no more knocking. The rears are very simple to fit took me an hour each side. You just have to remove the spring and top mount and fit these to the new KYB's.

For a matter of interest I stripped my olds shocks down and could not see anything obvious wrong with them (i had stripped them before and regreased them) but did not fit a grease nipple. They lasted about a week before knocking again. If you are going to pack them in grease I would deffo recommend you fit a grease nipple. Mine cost about 230 from memory so thought nice new ones would be a better job and they are superb. Pleasure to drive the car once again. I will post you a pic up when I get home from work.

Cheers for the help guys,

I've decided to go for some kyb's (ultra sr's) as replacements for the rears. 235 squid for the pair from camskill. I'll get some eibach pro kit springs on there whilst i'm at it and a decent geo setup. Got some downtime now from work so plenty of time to fit them too.

The shocks in question are kyb's for the 2001-2006 wrx sti , the rear shocks on the 06 wrx do share fitment as you mentioned. Hopefully i'll have a knock free wrx in a few weeks! I need to fix my vltd splitter too now as its just cracked, my classic's clutch assembly has decided to cause a judder now at byte too, so i've got a lot of work ahead of me!!!

I can confirm that you should have no problems fitting earlier KYB struts to cars up to 2006 - the top mount interface and strut design looks identical. NO new top mounts required.
