Default Knock - but only on 'heavy' gear change.

Hey ho,

I've found a number of posts about the suspension knocking when turning, but mine is a little different.

I'm getting a knock from the rear offside (I think) only when I accelerate extremely heavily on a heavy gear change. Is this the same knocking issue that others are talking about?

It's a 55/STi

Thanks,

m

Mine knocks if I try and launch it !

It's the diff. carrier complaining I think, you can get a pair of lock bolts and some "pineapple rings" to sort the rear out.

HTH

Only if you launch it alot !

LOL

I don't so haven't got round to doing the rear end mods mentioned.

However as it passes 400 bhp, and with a new "nasty" clutch in....

I expect it's a goer in the Spring !

dunx

t.b.h. It is likely to be a rear strut... they all do it, mine did till swapped !

hi m8 the knock that you are getting is caused by the diff cross beam bushes getting tired ,the have too much complience .when changing gear rapidly the beam moves upward and downward ,clonking against the body or the mounting bracket

this is how you cure the problem .fit the whiteline pineapple ring kit ,simple to do .hope this helps geo

Smart - thanks very much for the info and pictures

Would this be a warranty job though - this shouldn't happen should it?

How much is the whiteline pineapple ring kit? Does this replace the diff cross beam bushes or is it in addition to them? Is it easy to fit or does it require dropping the diff off the car?

They fit over and under the front cross beam of the rear axle. It can be done in situ in about an hour. They take the 'tramp' out of the rear axle assembly by eliminating rock or twist of the axle location.

They will transmit noise into the frame.

Yes the old NVH ( noisy viration harshness ) vicious circle, improve car, increase NVH.

I've just fitted up-rated engine/gearbox mounts to mine and it's quite noisy now !

Good noise though!
Dunx - I see from your Subaru pictures that you use performance friction brakes.
How do you find them?
Do you use Z compound?

the pineapple bushes dont transmit that much more n.v.h ,because theres still a little complience in the poly type .theres a difference between engine and gear box mounts (heavy duty ie Hard Race type now that does transmit vibs into the car .theres a trade off between performance /handling and N V H,you cant improve one without loosing out on the other Thats Life cheers geo

That's exactly the problem. The manufacturers go to great lengths to cut down NVH and the major units are all running on 'void ' bushes these days. A 'void ' bush is one where the rubber does not go all around the bush.

When you replace them with even full rubber bushes, let alone ' Neoprene ' ones, you immediately increase NVH.

All cars have diffs and gearboxes that make a noise, it is what transmissions do. What the manufacturer is trying to do, is prevent that noise being heard. As soon as you harden up the bushes the noise gets into the frame and can appear to be coming from just about anywhere.

Short shifters with hard bushes in do the same thing.
