Question ASTs/coilovers in LOW temperatures = RIP?

An acquaintance of mine has a set of Tein Flex dampers on his STI, last winter they simply "expired" during an ice track racing event. He believes it was due to the temperature. The night before the driving event took place, the temperatures had been down to -35 degc - but it raised to -20 degc during the day. I had no problems with my KYB AGX dampers.

This year, however, I have a set of new AST Sportline coilovers on my car. Is there any danger that I might experience the same problems? The dampers have to work hard, as we drive on a frozen lake which quickly gets torn up by studded rally tires.
