Default Classic Suspension Upgrade

Firstly apologise as subject has been covered before and I have searched but:

I am looking to upgrade the suspension on my 96 classic in the very near future and just wondering whats the current favourite?

I am going to replace all shocks and get some lowering springs, looking at tein and or eibach combination.

Car is an everyday car so a fair mix between comfort and performance is a must.

Thanks in advance for all comments.

IMHO:
Sti suspension from V3 or later.
Rear anti roll bar and solid drop links.(solid links for the front too)
Anti lift kit at the front
Bump steer mod
Camber bolts in the rear struts (maybe)
Expert alignment all round (essential)
Good tyres

That will give you a very nice drivable car, to go for a blast or to go on holiday in.

Contact PowerStation to get it done and never look back.

Graham.

I agree with Graham except the suspension where I suggest the Prodrive Professional kit (not the silver-blue coloured WR kit) if you could find it of course as it is available only in US but better ask your local dealer!

I'd start the same way as Graham - Solid drop links front and rear, then rear ARB and the Whiteline ALK followed by alignment.

That'll make a huge difference and doesn't cost too much (compared to a set of coil-overs). Once you've done it you can decide whether you still want to change the shocks.

For info I've done the above and also have fitted some AST coilovers - not the best by a long way, but better than standard shocks with over 100k miles on them and all I could afford at the time.

My car (a UK MY95 so basically the same as yours) is now pretty balanced under normal use, with a tendency to oversteer if the road is damp and the ARB is on its stiffest setting.

And me, I got KYB shocks and G Max springs, lowered by 30 mm. Only had this set-up a few days, but so far I'm very very pleased.

I had AVO coilovers before that were nice when new. Before I took them off they were crashing and banging......

In fairness I reckon the OEM set-up is better all round than coil-overs.

Also I have :-

Droplinks (front and rear)
Whiteline Anti Roll bar and up-rated mounts
P/S Bumpsteer and alignment with Camber bolts all around
Strutt braces (front STI and rear)

Hope this helps mate, Phill

Scoobynutt,

Follow Graham's advice as per the second post and you'll be chuffed to bits. My only addition would be that if you don't buy new, make sure the shocks aren't tired.

I have been offered sti5 dampers that have done about 50k although I usually buy new, have got a 20mm whiteline ARB & alloy droplinks to fit so will probably get some eibach springs and then get the prodrive geometry settings done.

Will see what that feels like then look at the other suggestions for anti lift kits etc.

Cheers for all the advice guys, will let you know how I get on

Obviously do what you feel is right, but be concious of the fact that after 50k those shocks will way past their best, particularly if they were matched with lowering springs.
