Are AVO coilovers crap?
Yes or No?
I've had mine on the car for nearly 2 years, someone looked at them today as they're knocking and banging and told me they leaking fluid and the springs have gone weak. I reckon I've probably done less than 10 k miles on them.
I was supposed to be getting an MOT today, so the cars off the road now
Thanks Phill
PS Is there any kind of aftersales support?

Had them on my00 uk turbo... not for long... went back twice under warrenty... then finally bit the bullet and they went back for good...
To stiff, bang, leak... handles well round the twisties, through town was a nightmare...
Will never have Avo's coilovers again...

A mate of mine, who's a mechanic and worked in the rallying world, has suggested that coilovers (for what I need them for) might not be the way forward. He said they're fine on a rally car, when rebuilt ever few months / few k miles, but that isn’t going to happen on mine. That does make a lot of sense to me. Once the damping rate and ride height are set, I'd leave them at that.
Anyway, Powerstation has a group buy already going on for AST coilovers!!! I'd be comfortable buying from P/S, as they have been great every time I've used them in the past, and I'm sure they'll support there products on-going
I have an option on some Ohlin coilovers, that are un-used and fitted to my mates rally car. Anyone got good or bad news regarding Ohlin? I reckon I could get them for £700?
Can get normal type suspension starting from £300 to £600
Thanks in advance for everyone’s help, Phill

Ohlins have a good name but where would you go for service ?
Certainly wouldn't be a 30 min trip up the motorway like us.
Safe in the knowledge PS would look after you fella.
Can you be sure the second hand standard shocks are not "tired" already.
I'm probably not the best person to advise about buying things for the car though Mr spend it even when I cant afford it Cookson.

Can only speak as i find:
Avos fell apart.
AST took it all, PS easy to deal with and coil-overs can be very good indeed if you spec them right.
PowerStation do that for you and fit and align and stand up to be counted.
A lot more than the AVO MD did when I asked where the brake hose brackets are only to be told to cable tie them in place!
I made my own and welded them onto the struts that were already rusting...
Buy the real deal like so many have already, AST.
Powerstation Customer.

Just to proove my point:
http://tinypic.com/9kulw5.jpg
These are 3 years old, never driven in the winter and have done 6000 miles.
The rears were nearly empty of oil and banged and crashed.
The fronts were silent but look the same.
I paid £650 for them 3 years ago and they came with the wrong spec springs, so I sourced the right springs (tbh more the fault of the 'specialist' I used at the time), so another £80.
Had to make parts, weld them on and then get them fitted, another £250 at a good specialist (and they were good incidentally)
Today the AST's are a grand fitted.
AST's in action with a Curtis set-up:

To try to balance this thread i know of one guy in Scotland who races on his AVO's and is happy, but they arn't used on the road.
Still, the weighting seems to be they belong in the skip after 3 or 6 or 12 months ish.
Buy some AST's.

Are you sure he's not secretly buying everyones good coilover (out the set) and using them?
Interesting that anyone from either suppliers or AVO has not made any comments!! Do you think they've cashed the cheques and ran?
Thanks Phill

My KW variant 3's are now 5 years old - been rebuilt once 2-3 years ago (free of charge, but had to send them back to factory in Germany) and could do with it again now.
They are good, but I'd also check out the AST's if buying new again.
As mentioned above - don't go coil-overs unless you really need too. What do you want to use the car for? Best ever b-road suspension config on my car was with Koni adjustable damper inserts and Eibach springs. I'm slower on b-roads with the coil-overs (car takes off.....), but the KW's were fitted to optimise track work.....which they're rather good at

I think Dowser is ****-on with that statement.
If my car was ever to be a road car I wouldn't use coils, but possibly P1 and all the rest I've got.
For my purposes coils have been great, as long as they are made by AST.
