Default Leda B Kit

Is this kit all it is cracked up to be?
Is it worth me fitting it?
Have heard some bad reports about fitting coilovers to scoobys?
Anyone?

I know some people have had rattles - with Leda, OE and other after market kits. As we have said before, if someone has this problem with our kit, we are more than happy to sort it out.
There are also alot of very happy customers, who've never had a rattle

Just as a note, one guy came back and the rattling was a lego brick caught down the back of the rear seat!

Regards

it all depends what you use the car for. if its primarily for track then yes, fit them. If its primarily for road use they'll probably drive you mental.

The reason people are negative about coil overs is they specify too harder springs - and then wonder why the ride is uncomfortable!

I had some clunking when I fitted them to my 944 Turbo - but, when the car was up on ramps you could see where the shocks were knocking.

A couple of 5 mm spacers and job done!

If the car is primarily for road use I would question anyone wanting stiffer that 250lbs springs.

I have 225lbs springs on the fronts and with the compression turned up a bit, I can assure you even this is a firm ride.

I've had LedaB for about 3.5 years now and they are very good indeed.

Track days, turn up, wind up the compression and off you go. Together with Brembo/APs on a PPP'd MY99 this combination was enough to "see off" STis, P1s, WRXs and all sorts. Then, when finished, wind down and off you go home

Fast sweeping A roads - the danglies - very composed.

Fast wiggly As and Bs - again, lovely composure and soak up the bumps, ruts like nothing else, inspiring great confidence.

Even on Cs and unclassifieds they are hard to fault.

Caveat on the above 2 paras is that you need to be doing at least 45 for them to work to their best effect. Tootling around at 30mph and they will bash/crash.

Rattles? Yep - rears rattled horribly all the year round until I had them rebuilt last year. Fronts do in very cold weather before warming up with use but I need to get them rebuilt. TBH, it doesn't bother me as it doesn't affect performance.

I have had to replace all 4 springs as they have broken BUT the recommendation is to have the units serviced every 18mnths/2 yrs which I did not do There was a batch of springs that were not as strong as others but they have been replaced with improved units.

I run the standard kit springs (can't recall the rate) and have the settings quite low for everyday use (6f/4r) and it IS a harsh ride when not being worked. If you aren't prepared to put up with that, then not for you. I've done nearly 70k miles with Leda on.

I rate 'em

Thumbs up There are good

I had them on my MY01 WRX - very good indeed. I too had a rattle on the rear but a quick trip to Leda and all fixed FOC. I have always found them very helpful and willing to help. I agree it helps living 15 mins away from them but I would reconmend them.

Go for it.

Happy Leda B driver now for 3e year ....mostly trackdays and french holidays (where driving is still fun).
Maybe on C roads the original suspension is better ....
uuhhh more comfortable .

Rear right side rattles when cold , but never something to complain about.....open exhaust solves most of the rattles and when they need to be reworked, that will be sorted out anyway....

Another happy leda B driver here, no rattles from the rear at all, the front did a little but a set of new top mounts soon fixed that

The ride is great, firm but not 'break ya back' style...

Q1. Is this kit all it is cracked up to be?
A1. No

Q2. Is it worth me fitting it?
A2. No, not unless you like the spring rates suited to track days ( easy to change ), allied to the damping, primary damping ( motorway dip or similar ) too soft, secondary damping ( kerb strike or similar ) too hard, which I never found a way of fixing

Q3. Have heard some bad reports about fitting coilovers to scoobys?
A3. Yes, however my Leda B's never did rattle. I certainly couldn't hear them rattle from the rubbish skip

Another good reason I found today

I went & purchased 3 rail-way sleepers. Bloke said "no way m8" but 'cos of the harder springs, it only shifted 3/4 inch

I think some good points made here. Coil-overs in general have a poor reputation (seen the article in Jap Performance Mag?) due to too hard springs fitted, the golden rule of the rear rate must be 80% of the front, and owners do not take the time to adjust the damping to the spring rate. This is trial and error.
I have a very early set of AVO units, they rattle, they do work, their quality is very poor, but with some messing about I have them compramised to work. I hill climb the cat (Sti v3) and use the hill climb spec for thr road too.
It is a hard ride, but you do fit them to improve the performance of the chassis!

Many LEDA units are used in all applications and cars, they are good and easy to use, the owner needs to adjust them to suit, Leda can't do this for you....

I had Leda B on my version 5 for nearly a year (back in 1999), after 3 return trips to Leda the rattle could not be resolved so I asked for my money back which is was.

Its a shame really as the car on the road was awesome, I think I would have tried some softer springs over the ones originally fitted but on the whole the performance was excellent. The only place where they were poor is on very bumpy roads but again they maybe because they were too stiff and lacked the give!!

Got no problems with mine. Slight rear rattle as they have been 2years since the rebuild.

YES I have had rear spring failue, but the new springs are better.

I like them, but then I can see that if you wind them up too high or drive over potholes, it could be uncomfortable. But certainly more comfortable than my mates EVO and some early STIs.

However, if your idea of a 'sports car' suspension is standard Uk spec springing. Buy an uprated set of roll bars and some new standard spec shocks instead.
