would this do anything for the handling of the car due to increased stiffness or is it just cosmetic?

It will improve high speed cornering/stability due to a stiffer chassis and it keep the suspension where it should be. They also look good under the bonnet. I had one on my Evo V

In everyday driving you won't notice a thing! It will help to keep the geometry as it should be in VERY quick road driving or on track days. Be careful re-insurance here - they don't tend to like them as in a front/side impact it may well transfer damage to the other side!
