The linear rate should improve initial turn-in more which in turn should reduce the tendancy to understeer. This depends on your corner entry technique, however - people who like to flick it in hard will benefit from the linear rate more than people who take a less aggressive approach to corner entry.

In general, a progressive spring will ride a bit nicer, and perhaps perform better over small bumps and high-frequency undulations where the lighter initial rate helps soak that sort of thing up. A linear spring will in general ride a bit rougher but respond quicker to driver inputs.

Here's a discussion we had on this subject at ClubWRX.net:

Thank you, spring rate reference is good

Regarding initial turn in, do you mean that this is due to higher initial rate of a linear rate spring increasing roll stiffness ?

If so you could also adjust roll stiffness by adjusting the swaybars

Of course! But then you could also put on linear springs AND big bars!

edit: plus the big bars will partially defeat the ride advantage of the progressive spring by making the suspension work less independently.

Cool

Linear rate springs are more predictable too. For example, linear springs should make for less "wobble" when you recover from a slide.
