Default Bug / Bob knocking suspension

I hear this is a very common problem

Is it really obvious when it happens, or is there some kind of test you can do so to speak?

I want to change the drop links anyway, I have solid ones on my classic and they made a big difference on their own

Mine has started to knock from the rear. It's fine when driving under normal conditions, fine round corners, speed bumps, heavy acceleration etc. It only does it when pulling away or when pulling up and then reversing. Is this shocks or drop links?

Could be your brake pads. Aftermarket pads tend to move in the calipers

I've just changed the rear shocks on my bug, started with a knocking sound but gradually developed into a thumping sound, like as if there was a football in the boot or something. Checked the car by doing a bounce test and then confirmed that they were knackered by getting under the car and feeling the shocks for leaks and they were both wet, the passenger side more than the drivers.

Mines doing this at slow speed, pulling away and stopping at first was just a small mocking sound from rear passnger side now devolveped in to a bad Nick , sounds like conning from susseption turret
Could it be top mount ? And is there an easy fix as replacing them at Xmas with coil overs

Have a read here:

There are also a few threads on scoobynet relating to this, particular in this suspension section. You just need to use the search function.

I am currently using the lithium white grease method which seems to ease the knocking for 4-5 weeks on mine. This is only an interim solution until I decide what I am going to replace my current suspension with.

Hi lads just to back up the greasing theory on the struts , had the knocking at the rear over uneven ground. Found a vid on utube , quick and easy , good as gold now , bit stiff at first give it a couple of days and it sorts itself out. Just to clarify boys it does work.
