Question 2008 STi - please help identify this component

Under the vehicle the other day (only had a month), and noticed this component, (best described as small control arm) it's about 8cm long has a ball and socket connection on both ends, one end connects to the NS rear main member carrying the wheel/hub etc, the other end connects to a bracket just behing the exhaust silencer, this bracket moves, but only pivots on a bolt, so only in one plane of direction.
The broken component looks like a small track control arm you would find on the front suspension area, it has clearly been busted for some time, (sheared off by the top knuckle),
So questions:
What is it?
Whats it called so I can get another?
Where to get another from ? (Hampshire)
What does it do?

I cant find a picture on the web anywhere, I took one but it is so cramped in there it's not very helpful.

Thanks

Ian..

as gambit said sounds like a headlight level. very common for those balljoints to seize and break.

Ahhh ! that would account for the wiring connection on the other side of the bracket ! (wondered what that could be for)

Perfect guys - thanks
