Default Import number plate rules?

Hi all might be a question covered a million times however I am told one thing by a company that makes plates and something completely different, one person tells me that jap imports must display a standard uk plate on the front, nothing else. The other says that they can display square plates, smaller plates or even no plate at all if the bumper does not accommodate space for one? He also says there was an article on the web somewhere which I should print out and keep in the car incase I was to get pulled with no plate? Can anyone advise me on this as I'm so confused

If UK law states in this country you have to have a front plate then I guess you would have to have one... Law of the land

It depends when the car was imported for one thing, the rules changed in 1999 to reflect this and that brought the number plate type into line.
There are exemptions to the rules like anything, one being cars that cannot fit a standard type number plate (some yank cars and cars like the evo that have a place for a square plate on the front), but the general rule is that if the car can fit a standard sized number plate then it has to fit it.
