Question

Looking to change the std WRX rear spoiler for something a little larger (STi/Prodrive style - but a little cheaper than OEM) and wondered what peoples experiences have been with different makes and the quality of them - any to particularly recommend or avoid?

Pleased to hear from Elephant insurance that they won't be increasing my premium for a new rear wing!

Re the insurance they shouldn't up the premium because the new wing won't be covered IIRC. I stopped my elephant insurance because they added a clause that meant modified parts were not covered, so if you new spoiler get stolen you will only get the money for the OE one the car came with. I kid you not.

Thats pretty standard my insurers noted my 18" Oz wheels but will only replace with OEM Wheels unless I want to increase my premium

Isn't the OEM wing more expensive than a replica one anyway !!

I'm thinking of one to replace my standard MY02 one also.

Cool

I'm still swinging the way of the TSL STi-type. Looks very nice IMHO.

Question

For those guys who have the Rallytech one, where did you get it from and how easy was it to fit.

Rallytech spoiler - piece of p*** to fit IF and thats a big IF you think about potential leaks BEFORE you stick it down. I like most people ended up sealing it from the underneath - did the job though!

Best place to get 1 from is www.drmotorsport.co.uk 450 quid painted and delivered.

Ru$$Rip,

When you say stick, do you actually mean stick as in glue?

Basically I don't really want to be doing any drilling, cutting or glueing

Could you be more specific about leaks as I am planning to buy a Rallytech spoiler that fits directly to factory holes(MY03)?
I have a Prodrive WR RB5 wing fitted to my MY00 Impreza and can tell you that it needs a lot of special glue (for spoilers) in order to have perfect sealing and it needs wider holes than the OEM spoiler.
Nissan fits their small wings without drilling, only with the above glue!

If in the excitement you rush to rip off the ghastly ironing borard and throw on your new spoiler there is a chance that you will not ensure that the existing boot lid holes AND more importantly the brake light cable hole are sealed properly from the top. The spoiler comes with a reel of double-sided strong tape which you need to put on the underneath of the spoiler to ensure a snug fit. HOWEVER once this tape is in place its a bugger to get back off and you risk damaging the spoiler.

UPDATE: I believe that if you buy the spoiler from ww.drmotorsport.co.uk they provide additional grommetts and pads to seal potential leaks from the top BEFORE you stick down your spoiler. I ended up sealing the leaks from the underneath after I had a leak. This was messy but effective.

Russ,
You've obviously been reading my reply to another thread last night.
But, as you say, it seems to be the hole that the brake light cable drops through that causes the problem.
So we now include a rubber grommet to seal the hole around the cable, and just to be on the safe side, also include 4 rubber pads to seal the bolt holes. We actually pinched these from the fitting kit of another spoiler we do, but it cures the problem.

David,

Just to recap. Your spoiler will fit as a replacement to the standard MY01 / 02 version with no drilling, just a bit of sealent and patients?

Thanks

Gareth, Yes.

A quick fitting guide for you - off the top of my head, and at half ten at night.

Remove your standard small spoiler, take out the brake light unit, stick the brake light unit into the rallytech spoiler, clean down the paintwork on the bootlid top, run a length of the double sided tape along the front / back and both side edges, stick the rubber pads around the spoiler bolts, put the rubber grommet into the brake light hole and feed the cable through it, drop the 4 bolt fixings down through the original holes and tighten up using the original nuts, connect the brake light plug back in, shut the boot, stand back and smile.

Probably best to give it a dry run fit without the pads and tape, also get a couple of mates to help hold it in place, difficult for 1 person to do themselves. Will take half a hour to fit for a first timer.

Question

Ed your 2nd hand spoiler from DR is completely the same with Rallytech's as it seems different on their site?
David I am curious if your spoiler is direct replacement to the OEM WRX03 which is my next car and if it uses all the factory bolts etc (AFAIK 02 and 03 are the same or am I wrong?).
Thanks
JIM

Jim, its the rallytech spoiler, but original buyer purchased rady-painted from DR.

And yes the boot is exactly the same on 01/02/03 cars so it will fit
