17 year old car, interior smells musty.......

Default 17 year old car, interior smells musty.......

Not damp, although it has been at times. Just has that "old car" smell to it.

Is there anything that can be done to freshen it?

Get a company to give it a deep clean. You can hire carpet cleaning companies to do your seats and carpets it will work a treat.

Musty smells are caused by mould so will need something anti-bacterial to properly get rid of the smell and the source of it, rather than mask with normal cleaners. Clear distilled vinegar diluted 50/50 with water works well but to be thorough you will need to strip the seats/interior out to make sure you get at all the mould. Works a treat if you can be bothered though.

Steam cleaners are probably worth a try as well but I've used the vinegar method on a leather recliner that had been left in a damp conservatory and had mouldy patches on, smelt very strong of mould and now looks/smells like new.

If the car has air con try changing the filter did that on mine got rid of the smell

Aircon? You have to be joking, that was a £1200 extra when I bought the car...for £7000 MORE than the Japs paid for their hotter, better equipped cars

THIS!!!,or use a good all purpose cleaner,but a musty smell is usually some mould bacteria going on in your cars interior.As above taking out your seats now the weather seems to be playing ball and give the car interior a good going over,if you have a wet vac that would be good as well.SJ.

Maybe in September......I'm away for the summer in less than a fortnight. Plus I don't trust the weather.

That looks worth a try.
Does anyone know if you end up cleaning tiny particles out of the car for the next ten years?
