Default STI spoiler for my WRX

I have recently got the STI big wing for my WRX. I have taken the WRX spoiler off which has stoods that go trough the bootlid. The new STI wing does not have stoods and looks like im going to have to drill up into it . Does this mean i have an after market spoiler? and whats the best way to fit?

cheers

Sounds aftermarket and not worth the effort mate. It's definitely worth getting a genuine STI spoiler, you will also need a STI bootlid to as the spoliers use more fittings than the 4 that the WRX uses. Plenty of guys on here which will sell both together, scoobyspares for one. Otherwise you will need to drill extra holes in your WRX lid and seal them which can be a pain.

And the chances are, if it's aftermarket, it will crack.

Don't forget also that the bigger spoiler is heavier, so needs stiffer bootlid springs.

Fitted an aftermarket STI carbon fibre spoiler to my WRX bootlid. Not straight forward. As said the WRX bootlid has supports in different places and drilling through the skin isn't simple as some places broke through inner supports etc. Is possible though but you do need to consider a way of ensuring all of the bolts/studs (stoods?) are water tight. I made silicone sheet gasket washers for all points and measured the thickness required at each point to ensure they were sealing. Not a drop of water in my boot in last 3 years since fitting.

Also as already said, your WRX bootlid springs will not be man enough. After fitting my lightweight carbon fibre STI spoiler my bootlid would shut with enough force to cut the planet in half! Upgraded to STI boot springs, doddle to fit with single screwdriver and a friend holding boot open for me. Well worth it.

Good luck!

Indeed. Poiler should already have stoods in it. Mine did. Certainly shouldn't need to drill poiler.

If the spoiler doesn't have STUDS then it should have a female thread (captive metal nuts) of some sort moulded into the fibreglass. You can not just drill and tap fibreglass.

You don't need the new boot springs/torsion bar lifter. I didn't change them two years ago and the boot still opens and doesn't close itself, ever. I also didn't drill the boot lid, just used the holes that matched up with the old low level spoiler and popped some badge tape on the contact areas to prevent vibrations etc.

It's not fallen off yet, it goes up and down the M1 4 days a week and my 5 year old likes to use it as a picnic table.

Mine is only held on with 6 bolts all within the original WRX spoiler footprint just in case I wanted to go back to it some day, plus quite a bit of **** hot double sided tape under the rest. Been solid since fitting.

My WRX boot springs were no where near strong enough now, I certainly needed to upgrade to STI ones.

Of course you don't NEED to change the boot springs....but it's better if you do.

Yes the boot will open and close without the correct boot springs but it certainly won't spring open like it should without them. On a windy day it certainly can close shut also, happened more times than I can remember. For the sake of a few quid second hand it's a no brainer.

I'll be getting the uprated boot torsion bars so the boot if open doesn't try and decapitate anyone with the slightest breeze.

Also saw my Dad close the boot the other day by letting gravity do the work, BANG it slammed, f### that
