Default Grand Prix Question

Just watched the start of the Malaysian. Now the first ten drivers have to start on the tyres they qualified on - so if they qualified on fast dry tyres do they have to skate around on these for a lap or two if the heavens open when the race starts before they can change to wets?

As an occasional watcher only I find the vast array of new rules too confusing to understand the race in depth, any non-petrolheads feel the same?

If it's before the start of the race when the heavens open i think the race director would declare a wet start then they can start in the inters/ wets - i think . They cannot change unless it is declared wet though

They only need to do one lap on each of the slick compounds. If it rains that goes out the window and wets can be used.

The moveable rear wing can't be used if it's raining.

I am an avid F1 fan And I think it is too confusing LOL!

As for the tyres it is up to race control to dictate whether they must keep the tyres from quali or not and in the case of a wet or moist track they would be given the option to change. Happened several times last year.

And when it dries up, you can use any tyres you like.

Sorry, but if you think that was boring you just need to stop watching F1 period. The new rukles may be slightly daft, rather confusing and the rest of it, but that was a pretty interesting race if you know what you are watching of course.

As F1 goes, without the rain, today was actually quite exciting.

Won't spoil it but someone is going to have a very bruised ***

That is the problem, it was an 'exciting' race as far as F1 goes, but still boring except to F1 anoraks who are into the minutia of KERS and tyre compounds.

Basically unless it pisses with rain then F1 is still a dull sport, more like chess than racing.

Golf, F1 - are there any sports you do like? I think with most sports you have to understand the subtleties to enjoy them.

Was talking about motor racing in general with someone during the week. Unless I know someone is into motorsport then I'm fully aware that it seems dull and pointless driving round in circles.

This same person love criket and will get up all hours to watch it. Couldn't think of anything more dull than criket. Don't mind playing golf and the nipper is quite into it but I would not sit and watch it.

And I'm not even sure how many players there are in the football team

On the same basis EVERY sport is pointless and dull......Footy is 90 mins of kicking a ball, golf is chasing after a ball, tennis is hit the ball, skiing; whats the point???...

As with everything those that find sports DULL, were usually the dorks at school who where picked last, or not at all. They will NEVER EVER admit that because they have their "alter ego" on in SNET....name themselves things like "de wonderfull", when in reality they are anything but.

I like to watch all sports, think the work that goes into the end product (what you watch on TV) is fascinating. I admit its not as COOL, or AWESOME as trolling SNET all day, but i/ we enjoy it!

Still good luck with the alter ego's guys!...You are really VERY COOL, and the only reason you never got picked is because you are TOO AWESOME, not because your a dork, or a geek, or run & throw like a girly....

I would now expect the AWESOME one's to respond with how AWESOME they were at sports!...no hard evidence just "in fact i was AWESOME" kind of talk.....I can hear them re living their traumatic child hood from here.....PMSL!!!!!

You seem to have a thing about posting negative comments on someone else's well meant thread.

Perhaps I should feel sorry for you but please indicate if any of the following apply: -

1) Is it your your rather peurile attempt to be "controversial"?

2) Were you abused as a child?

3) As 2) but as an adult ?

4) You are a miserable sod in reality?

Thanks, dl

Actually I don't really mind F1 that much but it could be more exciting. What does **** me off is that way Tennis, Golf, even F1 are marketed in this self-regarding, 'history in the making', jewelry and luxury watches kind of way. It's just disgusting - the nouveux riche vulgarity and conceitof it all!

It it was a bit more down to earth and not so up it's own **** I might respect it more.

^^^ thats reasonable Tony, but as with all sports they are the playground of the super rich, as is hollywood, but i bet you watch the latest block buster movie!>?!??

You cannot escape sponsorship, and vulgarity when you have the opportunity of watching the best, or the fastest, or the greatest there has ever been....

I largely think what SpecD has put is bollox too but to pick up on one point, 'watching the best, or the fastest, or the greatest there has ever been....'. Can we not just let them use the DRS whenever they want, that would be the mark of a great driver!

Bob, always picked last for football, hate the game and the pretentious ****** that go with it!

I like DRS & KERS and anything that means more chance of overtaking. But agree they should be able to use DRS wherever they want just like in quali. Problem is when it doesnt work like happened for Alonso and Webber (iirc) yesterday. Yes you could blame that on the teams system but I assume it must be the FIA who are running the control systems that ensure that a) driver is within 1 sec of car in front and b) that DRS can be used). Even with those failures I think it makes it more exciting.

Now I hear that Hamilton got penalised for making 2 defensive manouvers against Alonso. Can anyone tell me what the difference was between what Hamilton did and what Vettel did at the start (I was suprised DC nor MB mentioned that at all)?

An OK race for me, a little disapointed with Hamilton's day as I thought he and Vettel would mix it up a bit. Already have the feeling this season wont be as exciting as last years

Now this is the important question of the week, why on two consecutive races has an F1 thread been moved from NSR to Sport, surely Motor Sport General is where it belongs.

As with the F1 scene moderation aint what it used to be

I agree with TDW that they really are messing about so much with silly and useless rules and procedures which have done little or nothing to improve the spectacle. As he said they have their heads well and truly in that dark and nasty place.

The question is, why is it so difficult to overtake? The answer is the aerodynamic effect of the wings and the turbulent air behind them causing anyone behind to lose downforce. All this dicking around with Kers, adjustable rear wings coupled with complicated rules as far as their use is concerned, and rubbish tyres which wear out too quickly, in a effort to improve the spectacle does not really work. It is all sticking plaster.

I still think the answer is to get rid of what is causing the problems...ie the wings! Yes I know the cars would have to slow down a bit but it means that they would have to do some real design which would be good for road cars in the future, such as start to design proper suspensions again. It means that the relative driver skills would be far more important and we would see much more exciting tussles for the lead. Present suspensions are virtually immovable to stop the cars losing ground clearance from the downforce.

I think that aerodynamic downforce, although it increases the roadholding by friction, is destroying the real spectacle of racing and that it should be banned from all classes of racing.

I think that success in racing should be not only from the car design but also the driver's ability. The second requirement is being denigrated by the effects of modern aerodynamic attachments.

i still think they need to ditch all the rules bar the saftey rules, say it has to have a 3.0 none turbo engine and thats all.

would allow for much more inovation and stop them spending 10mill getting 0.0001% performance increase out of a wing, when a better whole design would be 10 times cheaper and give 10% improvment in performance, hows that for cost cutting

A lot of the restrictions are H&S anyway in an attempt to slow the cars down.

3ltr engines lol - we had those already and nigh on 1000bhp hence the drop to a 2.4 V8 which are still insane and only limited by the 18k rpm rule.

And am I the only one who thought Vettel was overly defensive off the starting grid? No less than Lewis who got a 20 sec penalty?
