Emlyn faces the fight of his life Feb 5 2004

By Matt Slater Echo Reporter

LIVERPOOL FC legend Emlyn Hughes admits he now faces a mighty struggle to overcome the brain tumour which ripped his world apart.
It has been diagnosed as cancerous, and the former Reds' star is about to have gruelling chemotherapy.
But Emlyn, 55, is determined to win the biggest battle of his life, so he can spend more precious years with wife Barbara and his two children.
Doctors have told him the tumour is, in the words of the ex-Liverpool skipper, a "very nasty little bugger".
Emlyn, who now lives on the outskirts of Sheffield, said: "I am having to go onto a high level of chemotherapy to try and reduce the size of the tumour.
"I know it will be hard but I will keep on going. I feel good and the doctors have been brilliant.
"It is cancer and I know how serious that is. But it can be treated and I am confident this will happen.
"So far the treatment has gone well."
Emlyn, who earned the nickname Crazy Horse during his football career, collapsed at his home in the middle of last year.
He was rushed to Sheffield's Royal Hallamshire hospital where experts confirmed he had a tumour.
During a five-hour operation surgeons removed as much of the growth as possible.
But weeks of radiotherapy sessions failed to get rid of the tumour and after it was diagnosed as cancerou s Emlyn went i nto chemotherapy.
That stopped it spreading and the former England international is now about to be put on a high-level course.
Emlyn said: "It has stopped growing, but I am not out of the woods yet, and we will have to see how things go.
"I have lost some of my hair but it does not bother me. I don't care what is on top of my head just what is going on inside."
Emlyn, who was awarded an OBE in 1980, won five league titles, two European cups, one FA cup and two UEFA cups during a glittering career at Anfield.
After quitting the game he moved into television work and become one of the team captains on the BBC's A Question of Sport.
He is now regarded as one of the best after dinner speakers on the circuit.
Emlyn said: "I would like to thank everyone in Liverpool for their support and it means so much to me.
"I am still working and what has happened will not get me down."

Thumbs up

Can only echo your sentiments, he's a very decent bloke and always funny - often tells some 'tall' stories about his career incidents, but that's part of after dinner speaking.

Keep Battling Crazy Horse.
