Default Modern TV football commentators

When did they stop commenting on what's going on and just leave long silences, interspersed with almost fawning comments about one player or another?

Last night's Spain v Portugal was a case in point. I'm pretty certain the commentator fancied both Ronaldo and Iniesta, never heard such comments before and wish we could return to the old style, one-man-in-the-commentary-box type of commentary.
