I've been the last two years and can seriously say, this is the closest you get to the machinery than any event i've ever been to.
Last year we stood by the Honda mechanics as they fired up the Jordan for an installation check and all I can say was "awesome" - Being about 3 yds away as the mechanic blipped the throttle was very memorable.
Jenson Bottom and Johnny Herbert frying their rear tyres was also worth a look.
Peta Solberg(spelling?) did some pretty good donnuts as well.
Steve.

Hi Steve
What d'ya know I've been for the last two as-well, and you're right it is fan-bl**dy-tastic!
I tend to go on the friday cos there are a hack of a lot less people there, but the machinery is just the same.
I've gotta go this year cos it's within a day or two of my birthday!
See ya

Trigger ... we go on the Sunday because usually have to work on the Saturday am. You do need the whole day there as there is so much to see.
Steve B is right. You can get within feet of the cars - last year we were lucky enough to see Richard Burns on the subaru stand (got some good photos) (shortly after he was racing the Scooby up the hillclimb after a number of donuts for the crowds at the bottom of the course) and Marcus Gronholm was signing autographs by his car on the Peugeot stand! You can literally touch the cars ranging from the salt flat racers of the forties through to the modern age including RS200, 6R4, McLaren F1, Vipers straight from Le Mans complete with rubber on the bonnet still, Formula 1 cars through the ages - the Jaguar display was awesome. You've then got all the trade stands - excellent sounds coming from the Cobra stand . It really is huge there and you can stand right at the side of the hillclimb track and see the whole of the rest of the track via. huge TV screens. There's no need to miss a thing!
Everyone who is anyone in motorsport is usually there and most of them are racing one car or another.
Although, the Sunday is the busiest day, the place is so vast that it didn't seem that crowded (I think 100,000 people attended!). Sadly, a driver and marshall were killed last year on the Saturday. The Friday has unofficial practice on the hillclimb track in the afternoon, there is official practice on the Saturday and the Sunday is full-on race day all day.
You are right about Carl Fogarty, he will be there quote "as part of a major Ducati presence" along with John Surtees.
Anyway, whichever day you decide to go I'm sure you will enjoy it.
Don't know what the website says as I haven't looked yet but you may find more details there on

Hi guys
Iain - bought our tickets for the Sunday last year in about April. If you want Grandstand tickets, they sell out pretty quick though. I'll probably wait until about April to get mine. Nice to meet you on Sunday .... funny about the to$$er in the Supra who went the wrong way up the dual carriageway wasn't it Glad your other half enjoyed herself.
See you Sunday.

If you go on the Friday and get to the paddock after 6 pm there is nobody there, except for a few mechanics tweaking the cars, they're all approachable - closest you'll get to any of the cars. (not the works ones tho').
