Alton town center Scoob only day
A copy of an e mail sent to me recently from the Alton Town Initiatives Manager
Time to think about that Scooby meet again. Here are some Sundays I could arrange to
have the Market Sq. closed off in order to accommodate you. (I need 6 weeks notice to
do the biz. on council paperwork, etc.)
May 16
May 30
August 8, 15, 22
Sept 5, 12
There are 3 pubs and 2 restaurants in or immediately adjacent to the Sq. and lots more
within walking distance and a one-way system to have a cruise in!
Let me know what you would like to go for. If you want to come and inspect the
facilities, I'm organising a music event "Live in the Sq" on Sat. May 1st. 3-8pm or
another time tba.
We have the whole town center to ourselves if we want it is anyone interested. Not worth it for a couple obviously but we have been invited.

It has to be the September dates
1. gives time to organise
2. Most people have holidays around August
3. May is here, no time to get the interest or organisation done
All the best

Looking into a brewery tour as well lol. Space isnt an issue apparently
Simon,
No problem! Depending on the final number, can shut off part of the High St
as well as Market Square - as long as I know 6 weeks in advance.
Sundays 5th or 12th are only possibilities at moment.
Apart from having more pubs than any other market town I know, Alton has some
culture - Curtis Museum and Allen Gallery, Jane Austen's House at nearby
Chawton and Gilbert White's House at nearby Selborne. Alton was also the scene
of a battle in the English Civil War between Royalists and Parliamentarians,
ending in St Lawrence Church, close to the town centre, where they killed some guy called
Colonel Bolle inside the church! There are still musket-ball holes in the church doorway!
We are also famous for the dubious story of Fanny Adams, who was killed in Flood Meadows close
to the town centre in the last century and is buried at St Lawrence Church - the guy who killed
her chopped up her body which was compared by sailors at the time to the corned beef they were fed.
This led to the phrase - "we get sweet Fanny Adams" which became "sweet F.A." and finally "f*** all!"
There is a Coors Brewery in town - don't know if I could get a brewery tour on Sunday if enough interested?
Alton is also the starting point of the Watercress Line, which runs through the lovely Hampshire
countryside to Alresford, if you have any steam anoraks who also drive Scoobies! It's also a good
day out for kids!
Sounds as if it could be a good-sized meet! Keep in touch.

Latest e mail regarding space
Hey - this is looking good! 30 already. Keep rollin' in - if we park them herring-bone
along the High St and in the Square, we could easily accomodate 50.
If it is really that popular, I'll close off one of the car parks as well and then we're talking 100+!
Let's go for 5th September - and hope the weather is still good. Well done - looking forward
tp filling Alton with Scoobies.
Regards, Vernon
