Car is 2004 STI prodrive (blob) widetrack. Completely standard, standard ride height, using 17" prodrive widetrack wheels at the minute but looking to upgrade.

I have been offered some rather tasty XXR527's by two separate owners, they are different sizes and I want to know what if any will fit on the car without any modifications.

Option 1
R18 X 8.75 ET35 (Tyres are 225/40/18)
PCD - he says they are 5x100 / 5x114.3 (dual fitment is this correct)

Option 2
R18 X 9.75 ET20 (Unknown tyre size at this time)


Please can I have your thoughts based on experience and recommendations.

are Xxr's any good quality and build wise though? Or same as inovit...

 

In short, neither. If you leave the ride height standard then you're better off with the 8.75" ET35 wide versions. This is what I've run on 2 cars now. If you want to fit them properly and lower the car a little then you'll need camber bolts front and rear and you'll need to roll the rear arches at the very least.


to fit the 9.5" versions either you'll need to put enough camber on so it looks daft and drives ****, or you'll need fender flares.

 

Also, I've had absolutely no issues with the XXR's I've had for 3 years now. Bought mine from Japshop who are the main UK importer and they told me that there were 2 factories that made them, one of which (not their supplier) had worse quality. Impossible to tell if this is true or where the point of origin was of a set of wheels. Suffice to say that bar the occasional stone chip (very few thankfully) due to the design of the wheel and the amount of power coated wheel protruding from the tyre, mine still look like new.

 

My inovites on the bug fell to pieces in 6months 2 were loosing air and buckled one although it had a good sidewall never again

Always wanted a set of Xxr's when I had my bug almost bought a new set and had budgeted the arches and suspend worked out @ nearly £3k just before I sold the car shame really

 

Thank you so are you saying that I am better getting a different width and ET? If so what do I need? Will they ET35 fit straight on without mods and rubbing?

With XXR wheels, 8.75" wide and ET35 is your best chance of tucking the wheel into the arch. As the ET number gets smaller the wheel gets pushed out more. i.e. ET25 will stick out 10mm further than ET35. You can't go any higher than ET35 on the XXR wheels as they will then catch the strut on the inside.


In my experience to get the 8.75" ET35 wheels fitted with 225/40/18 tyres to fit just right and not rub anywhere I needed camber bolts front & back with -1.5deg negative camber at the back and -1.0 deg at the front. I then had to roll my rear arch lip so that it didn't scrape.


Once that was done they fitted great, looked great and never rubbed at all. Great setup if done right.

Hi yeah standard set up chap

 

Cousin just fitted same wheels on his blob 8.75 and et35 rears catch like f$$k so needs them rolled also on standard sti suspension but wearing 235/40/18

 

He'll have to do a lot of rolling to get 235 tyres to fit under the arches. Should have gone with 225 tyres. May really struggle to get them to fit right.
