do you know your pin number for the remote pad?

Have you tried to disarm in the car with ignition on? some early alarms did have interferiance problems from either electrics or mobile masts. do not remember sigmas having this issue though

thats not good if you can not disarm the alarm you will not be able to program in a new remote there is a factory reset code for the alarm but you need the serial number and to phone sigma being an authorised dealer only. the dealer can reset your pin number at the same time as putting in a new remote

So you got the car home and the fob still dont work? Def try and change the batteries before you rule out the fob.

Doubt if that would help, well it would work, but do you really want to have to replace the alarm unit.
The fob from Subaru is 35 quid, so you may aswell get it from there, for them to code it. Its just getting the car there that will be your problem.

thanks joey - might have be my option like you say - mission getting to the dealer 30miles away

Ive taken the fob apart, the circuit board was rather corroded in places I used a small toothbrush and a tiny bit of petrol to remove the corrosion/furring - the LED now lights up again when flexing the board slightly and pressing the button, offered it up against the car itself again, still nothing - this has been my whole weekend so far

as appears to be working now (the led bit anyway) can another fob be made up using this one as a template does anyone know?

thanks for all your replies guys

To be honest you will need a mobile dealer to visit you I have the hand held programmer
To do this but you are to far away
They then can reprogramme the new remote in without the keypad bit
have you got the original pin number
