To keep Cat 1 approval for insurance does the system need to be "serviced" annually?

John,
I dont think it is neccessary but it is nice to have your system checked once a year to make sure it works well and any recalibrations sorted at the same time

John,

Strictly speaking yes, but in reality you'd be a bit daft to leave it that long. I always recommend customers check their alarms at least once a month. Most alarms have self check facilities on these days and the onus is on the customer to inform the installer if there are any malfunctions. Generally speaking, alarms tend to be very reliable these days, but they won't go wrong at a convenient time, ie.364 days after the installation date !

I meant for the Cat 1 approval since the VSIB certificate says that it should be serviced annually? Checking it yourself, or having it checked by a certified professional could be two different things from an insurer's viewpoint.

Does this cover for OE alarms that are factory fitted?

Insurers only want proof that it's fitted - not sure if in small print anywhere if it has to be working even ???

I've been installing security systems for a good few years now and have never experenced a customer wanting an annual service due to insurance policy requirments. If the security system is factory fitted, the insurance companys generally know whats fitted anyway.

Yep,

Got to agree, I've never heard of an Insurance company requesting an annual service certificate. It always makes me laugh when our local fire safety company calls around and asks if he can service our extinguishers (at a cost of course !). Umm, don't they have gauges on ma boy is my response !

Again I cannot emphasise enough the important of checking the Alarm yourself-frequently, it's so easy. I'll happily check them out for those too lazy !
