Talking massive thanks to Wallace Performance

Got a unichip fitted to my uk 97 wagon last week, by Wallace Performance. The difference in the car is unbelievable. Well done Gav & Russell

Boost control solenoid?

Remeber that the WRX runs a TD05 which should run 0.7 bar boost but will only run 0.5 if it is in LIMP MODE. RESET the ECU and that should give you any error codes.

If your stuck about any of this call me on 01224 749972 and we'll meet up later on Sunday to reset the ECU and check for error codes.

Russell

BHP Developments, Aberdeen

ps - remember that the WRX has 240ps which is 236 bhp standard but that figure is on 100RON. What fuel you running? run it on 95RON and all you'll get about 230 with a decat.

I'll send you the ECU info tomorrow along with the reset procedures using the email address you sent me and hopefully that will get you back up to where you should be.

Speak to you when I get back in the country!

Hi mate,

I think Russ diagnosed the problem when it was in for diagnostics with us. The ECU is detecting knock due to the timing being too advanced for the british fuel spec, detonating and therefor opens the solenoid to reduce the boost level. The only real way around this is:
1. Change the ECU for one that has less ignition advance on it
2. Get your Vehicle Unichipped by ourselves like simon (above) did. This will get your boost pressure back up, sort your ignition timing out and give you more BHP and torque.

Hope this helps

Gav that would be expected on 95RON fuel as the JECS ECU can only retard the ignition 6 degrees, if it still dets after that then the ECU goes into "limp mode" and leaves the Boost control solenoid fully shut so the boost only goes up the Wastegate opening pressure (+/- 0.5 bar)

As Gav says,options are

1-get Unichip from Gav (good idea)

2 - Run Octane booster with the Optimax (cheaper in the short term)

But after our phone call Mark, I feel that if you want the 280 bhp and that is your limit, try for a Z4 ECU (your currently on a U8 AFAIK) or get Gav to supply and fit a Unichip, he'll do you a sorted Map and the car will run well, it all depends on how much money you have!

I agree - Unichip would be the better option in terms of value for moneyif you uprate other parts in the future.

But the Z4 will suffice if you stick to a limit of 280.

Speak to Gavin, he'll point you in the right direction.

But dont expect 280 with just a Z4, decat and filter. I was hoping for that approx and got 250. Even with the ScoobyECU and 16 psi of boost, it still isnt keen to get there!

Also 93 WRX.

You will get a better and safer figure if you fit a more efficient intercooler. One from a V4 STI will be able to be retrofitted (I know coz I did one for a friend 3 months ago) and you can find them on Ebay for about 150.

Unless you have 500 to spend on a front mount?

STi8 Intercooler WILL NOT FIT ON A MY93 WRX

Sorry Marc but the is not enough clearance between Throttle Body and rear bulkhead!

Russell

Power Junkie - got one yet? If your struggling, you can use my one in "BHP stores" and square me up when I get home!

Is the STi8 IC wider than a 02 WRX?

If not, then it will fit.

All you need to do is take a hammer to the bracket which the gearbox pitch is attatched to and cut a slice off the throttle body.

AFAIK they are the same width. Even the MY99 wasn't massively different in width, only length really.

STi intercooler is also a little thicker than the WRX.

Plus, due to the inlet manifold not being as high as the newer models, the I/C will sit at too awkward an angle and MAY touch the bonnet at the back of the engine bay when it is closed.

I am always happy to try and fit one again to another car to prove me wrong and if it fits, I'll hold my hands up and admit I'm wrong. But it ain't often

Lol. Fair enough if it's deeper.

I know it's a mental angle, but not as bad i would say, as when i fitted a tilt kit to the RB. Having taken about 8mm off the throttle body and the lip off the IC, it is tight, but enough room.

Only reason's i didn't bother with the STI IC, was cost and clutch reservoir. Got this IC for a ton, which isn't too shabby. Samco's cost more FFS!

Mark - you'll need a 90 degree samco hose fo the connection between the turbo and the I/C. need to be 51-52mm ID and the "legs" need to be 135mm minimum.

I'll try and get the details to you but I'll need to runthrough them in order on piece of paper before I get them to you. Just keep it to yourself as I am sorting out comlpete, ready-to-go kits at the moment.

drb5 - you only need to remove 20mm from the bottom of the clear plastic clutch reservoir to allow the V8 TMIC to fit with clearance (4-5mm) It's been done in 15-20 minutes on both the cars I have modded the V8 TMIC for (and this included a full bleed to new clutch fluid) and have had no problems.

Just to update this and to anyone who thinks the Unichip in anyway is restrictive compared to any other management system. I just got 330 BHP and 330lbft out of simon9's car.

I'll leave Simon to list all the mods but I don't even think the complete package came to £2000....

See you soon Mark,

Gavin
