I heard a rumour today that Williams F1 have made an offer (presumably to McDermott's) for the fabrication yard at Ardersier.
The plan is to develop a test track on the site.
Any locals heard anything about this ?

On the face of it, it does seem weird but I understand that it has been looked at in the past with a view to developing it as a motor sport facility (by private individuals / syndicates).
I've been thinking about it and ...
I've been thinking about it and ...
- A lot of the tarmac is already in place
- It's a secure site (prying eyes are fenced out)
- You can count on one hand the number of folk living close by (i.e. no noise issue)
- There's plenty of sheds / hangars
- It's on the door-step of a reasonable airport

it is a cracker! having worked there for 6 years there is only about 600 metres of tar (which will be u/s now)and it is anything but secure.there is only a few locals near and there is an airport near but that is it.the place is a desert!.i only stay about 27 miles away (or 22 minutes away in the good old days with my mk2 sunbeam lotus)

I can see Milton airfield from sitting here, and the problem is that it is still owned and operated by the RAF as a "listening station" The only club that uses it is the Raf Motor Sport Club who hold a tarmac rally there once a year. It is used by an HGV training school who also have a "Skid Car" but they pay a fee for it, admittance to the public is not allowed, Boo Hoo!!!

There is a possibility of a RWUB up north of scotland end of august and going up there tomorrow to give the place the once over and hopefully will be able to confirm next week.
the place in question is near Thurso.
any questions I'll try to answer next week

Is that where they hold the kart racing?, we provide emergency cover occasionally for the championship races up there. There is a show and shine in Elgin this weekend and there was a Fast Car event up in Inverness the other weekend, the north is starting to fight back?

Never heard anything about the F1 thing LOL Will try and find out - had the Auction brocher for all the old stuff out at Ardersier today! Some pretty meaty stuff! I can't see any of the local plant hire peeps using some of those craines - they are huge

I live about two miles away from the yard in question and haven't heard anything about it yet but will be doing some investigation regarding this. Icouldn't think of a better location to be honest. It is just far enough from any houses etc not to bother anyone and it is pretty big really.
One thing that is a bit of a pi$$er is the weather up here. It dribbles down all day every day!!!
Nice place other than that though.
I would be DELIGHTED if it all goes ahead!!!!!!!!

I might have sussed why the rumour has started, my mate works at Highland Galvanisers in Elgin and they are working on a part of the wind tunnel for Williams Engineering....................................... .................or might it only be going as far as Ardersier????????

Sorry for the pedantic (and off topic) nature of this mail. However, just to set the records straight, Nairn is NOT a wet place, as mentioned in a previous message. That area is one of the driest in Scotland! People in Aberdeen also complain about how wet it is - they don't know what wet is! Aberdeen gets about 850mm rain per year. I was born in Fort William. There are areas close to there that get nearly 4500mm per year! Sorry but I just had to get that off my chest!

Hamish, not trying to put you down or anything but I have lived there for 23 years now.
I'd appreciate if you kept your thoughts to yourself regarding this. If you haven't lived there, you can't possibly comment. Now if you want to start a thread about the weather, get your statistical info sorted and go to www.ilovetalkingaboutweather.com or something.
Keep this thread to the topic. Appreciated.
