Question

Hi Guys,

I'm sending my car (below) home from its current Hong Kong location and i need some help - i hope you can help.

Now, you can see its an STi V5 but i need to make it road legal in the UK and i'm wondering if you know a workshop / mechanic that can do the work. It needs kph to mph, rear fog light and a new frequency in the C/Lock Remote. I don't know if it MUST have an alarm fitted these days (i've been out of scotland for 8 years).

Also, as this is a personal import back to the UK can anyone tell me what taxes i need to pay. I was told that i need to pay 10% Sales Tax but if i don't sell the car in the first year then i get that back. True? What about the VAT as well?

The car should be put in a container at the end of August and arrive in England about the end of September. Does anybody know the cheapest way to get a car from down South whilst still on HK / foreign plates?

I know it's a lot of questions but the answers are probably quite short.

Thanks for any help you can give?

I think you should mail the DVLA and ask them what is neaded for an SVA. then find a SVA testing station ( think there is one in Aberrdeen) iam sure they can do the work or tell you a loacal garadge that will. as for the money side of things try the DVLA they are usaly realy helpfull.

hope this helps

Hi Brian,

I wouldn`t usually but i`m gonna agree with Garry on this 1
SVA & DVLA were very helpfull when mine was done about 4 years ago.
Wasn`t that expensive to do and with a bit of paper pushing u can even save on that. The main 1 was the speedo conversion (which I had Falkland Performance do).

I got the package "How to Import..." from DVLA and i know of the testing centres in Aberdeen and Glasgow (only two).

Thanks for the e-mail Pete. I didn't know the tyres had to be "Z" rated, i thought that came down to personal choice and there was nothing mentioned in the SVA paperwork. I knew the mph had to be fitted but i didn't know if the Scoobs already met the fuel nozzle requirement - i guess they don't. Maybe the problem i will have comes with the Door Lock Remote Frequency and how that can be changed. I suppose you're talking about Falkland in.......let me think, Glenrothes for the mods?

My father is helping me phone the DVLA about the tax stuff cause their paperwork just refers to the Inland Revenue and their website is a bit confusing and vague (i guess i don't speak "politician").

There is also conflicting information about how long i need to keep the car before i can sell it (tax free). Some people have said that if i sell it within the first year after import then i need to pay tax while others have said that spec has been either cut or removed.

Anyway, thanx.

Amanada-Jane, don't tell the Inland Revenue or Customs people but i'm moving to Malaysia and can't take my car because of a 180% import tax and I don't want to sell it.

I have the choice to send it back and "keep it in the family" until i do decide to come home OR sell it in a market where there are more people, much more people. I'm hoping one of my family or friends falls in luv with it and will look after it for me, allowing me to drive it when i come home.

If i get somebody to pick the car up from Felixstoww / Southampton then i hope that trip back North does the trick.

Oh, that's my flat in the background of the top photo as well so you see i just had to find a place "just like home" only hotter. I can't bear going into the city just cause there's too many people so i got a place to live that was cheap (oops sorry, force of habit) and quiet.
