Anyone here know about turbos!!!!

Yeh yeh I know it os not a Scoob but after owning one to travel to work with I have had to get a more "economical"(allegedly) car. The wife runs a 406 hdi 2.0 estate which is the 90 bhp model. she had a Xantia before which was slighlty lighter but only had 80 odd bhp but was much faster. I tow a trailer/caravan/horsebox with it and it seems to be a bit down on power.
I had someone connect a laptop briefly to it and the sensor stated there was no boost but when you drive it you can hear the turbo spin. I am supposed to get 50 mpg out of it but cannot manage more than 40 odd.
Do you think something could be wrong? how reliable is the sensor whilst not moving and will it show boost when stationary(revving)? Am I being a bit too optimistic with this?
Any ideas???????????????????????????

You won't show any boost when stationary, but the Xantia may have felt quicker due to lower gearing compared to the 406.
I think there would be a fair old difference in weight between the two as the 406 estate is a much bigger car.

take the car to Mick Harvey in springkerse Industrial Estate in Stirling they are Diesel specialists and are very knowledgeable, Ask for Mick himself, Nice Geordie Guy, He will have the answers, what mileage has your car done? maybe needs the Fule injectors cleaned or replaced
hope this helps,
You will find their phone number in the book

I may be wrong but is the HDI not a high pressure injection type diesel and the Citroen is a turbo.

Thanks for the replies guys.
Andy,
Yes me thinks the Pug may need to go to the vets!!!!!!
Would a boost gauge give me an indication what is wrong. I can hear the turbo spinning up but cannot feel any surge. This may be due to the way the car is mapped. I want to get the car chipped eventually but not until I have this confirmed.
Benview,
I would like to get to the bottom of this myself if poss. Not only for the financial benefits but for my own learning which is more important.
Frazer,
The car still has a turbo, possibly a smaller one but the car should still feel quicker than the Xantia according to Andy's figures.
The car feels dead pulling away from traffic lights and junctions but this is where a diesel should shine
Graham
P.S I may have to get the dogs to get out and pull!!!!!!
