wrx ppp bigeye low power?
hi everyone, just bought 2001 wrx ppp bug, on the drive home my mate was in my TT and it is definitely quite a bit quicker. TT is bog standard 225.
i have spent most of the afternoon on here searching old posts etc and trying to find out if there is a problem.
i have the documentation proving the ppp upgrade was installed in 05, but i also found a thread about bugs and ppp only making 225bhp on enginetuners dyno.
im not hugely bothered by the power but more a little surprised. i have also read that an ecu reset may be required, especially if it may have been run on crap fuel. is this something i need specific tools for? or do i just need an obd2?
and finally for now if i go for a remap this will write over the ppp, is this a bad thing? how can check that this ecu is in fact still fitted?
many thanks
buntz

The audi tt has a transverse engine layout with a transfer box right? How does that compare with a scoob with a crank pointing straight out the back with a longditudal layout? Genuinely interested as I'd have put the Subaru system down as being more efficient given there should be less turns to divert power with a crank facing the correct way that's all. Quite happy to be flamed for the knowledge gap there.

WRX bug will have long ratios, make sure you launch hard with 7200k changes to utilise 1st and 2nd, don't just try and pick the car up from 30mph in 3rd.

good point, the TT has a six speed box too, however i still feel the bug is lacking a little, TT is also an 01 with more miles and it started out with 225bhp claimed, still bog standard and quite a bit more "seat of the pants" shove to it. how do i reset the edu on this car? i'll fill up with proper fuel tomorrow and run through some basics, then report back.

Don't know if it was run on 95. Previous seems to have looked after it we'll so maybe not. But if he knew he was selling perhaps he skimped a little? Would this require a reset. If so how best to perform one?

Get a boost gauge fitted and see what boost you running. Should be 16-18 psi if not then you maybe missing the restrictor pill in small boost hose between turbo and boost control solanoid.

Should really have a boost gauge fitted bud. So you can keep an eye on things. Do you have all the other ppp things fitted? Should have blue prodrive intercooler y-pipe ect... I have recently done this to mine and is alot quicker than standard wrx!

I have a fairly accurate reading on torque pro app but I had to do a lot of tinkering with the settings to get it. Best off with a boost gauge or a tuner should be able to tell you without breaking the bank.

just been for a bit more of a spin and it definitely feels a bit flat, not slow but just underwhelming when it comes on song, like its not getting enough boost. i think a trip to a rolling road is in order just for a diagnostic check, engine tuner are in plymouth and probably my nearest, £70 sound about right?
as for the plugs its all serviced up to date and quite recently,
are there any mechanical checks i can do on the turbo side? i had a sticky turbo actuator on another vehicle but that would throw up a fault light yes?

quick update, i know it's unlikely to be hugely accurate but i have the iPhone app "rev" and just did a very quick test run measuring boost, figures are in psi.
at idle it was -10 and peak was only 9.5. can anyone tell me if the idle is about right? will aim to get on a dyno soon but meantime i may be able to pinpoint any probs. i will try it out on my (now ex ) TT my mate just bought off me to see what it reads on that,

yep full version, what does yours give for a boost pressure at idle?
further reading on here has indicated restrictor pill positioning could cause this? I've been out for a look and the i can feel a pill in the shortest pipe coming off the plastic tee, from what i read it seems it should be in the one on the opposite side of the tee? can anyone confirm this? i'll look into how i post a picture in a bit.
will it be safe to try and swap this around? i can try and measure the size of the hole while its out.
cheers

don't know if this will work but i copied this pic from another thread and it shows the pill should be in the opposite side of the tee to where mine is fitted, I'm gonna try and swap it round and see what happens

now making 15psi and feels exactly how i hoped it was gonna, massive improvement, thanks to all those who contribute to this site, a real wealth of info, i would never have thought a tiny restrictor pill would be the culprit.
cheers you lot

yeah i can only guess that when the prodrive kit was installed it got mixed up then? i think i read somewhere that ppp MIGHT include a smaller pill? as per markb588's post above, if anyone can shed some light on this it could be good to know for the future (if my mate remaps the TT maybe). also this would mean the car has been VERY under stressed since ppp in 05!! who knows?
