Default bit of help for the FNG?

Hi fellas,
I've liked Subaru's for years and years but haven't had the money or reason to buy one, now I'm going to need transport from Wolverhampton to Birmingham every weekend and have a modest sum of about 4k at my disposal. I'm hoping I can get an older preferably 2dr Subaru and insurance for under that :S any help or advise on model to go for would be ace. I thought I'd leave this bit til last... But yes I'm 18!! Bring on the help and hate
Cheers,
Calum

The 2 door models are the P1, 22b and the STi Type R's ... the P1 and 22B are over your price range but you may be lucky enough to pick up a Type R for the 4-5k region however this will leave you with nothing for insurance.

My advice would be to go for a uk turbo 2000 to start with and gain some experience - any of the specialist insurers are going to be reluctant to insure you if you don't have any experience of driving these type of vehicles though but the Turbo 2000 is the cheapest model to insure I believe.

I had to wait till I was 25 to insure my sti at a reasonable price. My advice would be to get quotes 1st before getting your hopes up. Also consider running costs as they love drinking petrol

A friend has a hawkeye sport (full sti replica) for 3.5k ,,, I think it would be a good stepping stone to a more powerful subaru once your insurance comes down a bit ,,, I think its a really nice motor

I'd buy something which would be much faster, cheaper to run and cheaper to insure to help the Turbo fund such as a Fabia VRS.

I understand that.
I had a uk Turbo at 23 (13 years ago) with 3 years no claims and it was £1100 fully comp - I can't even imagine what that figure would be now.

Don't think it's been mentioned yet - have you looked into the running costs of a Scoob?

I love your enthusiasm and the fact your being realistic. The advice so far as been the best your likely to get.

If I was you and your age (I wish) I would consider a lesser marque to start you off and the VRs would certainly be a good shout.

At 18 the £4k might just about cover the insurance alone.

Good luck with it, but in my opinion an Impreza is a REALLY bad choice for someone with limited driving experience.
The traction that you get from the AWD is deceptive and makes you feel invincible, and the handling characteristics of the Impreza (especially classics) don't leave much room for error if you get it wrong. Slow speed understeer and uncorrectable medium speed snap oversteer mean that they're not particularly driver-friendly. I'm sure that this will get the purists up in arms, but a front drive hatch would be a much better bet.
