Default Heat soak symptoms?

Hi All,

in my MY00 uk turbo (standard) after about 30 minutes of driving my car seems to loose a little poke, not much but is does seem less and the turbo spool noise is also less. I'm guessing its heat soak but are there any others ways of determining that it is that?

Very odd, i would understand it if it were a chunky open cone or something. If its just been serviced then if anything... it should go better.
I'm out of ideas I am afraid.

Well she ran a lot smoother after the treacle looking oil that was in her

Also is it normal that the side vents have a metal plate under them which surely would inhibit air flow? or are they just for looks?

To stop the water?... At a guess, they do have little holes in the bottom of the plates, ..... As in these? http://item.mobileweb.ebay.co.uk/vie...d=151076645121

I have a near identical vehicle but a saloon, I wouldn't have thought heat soak would have been the issue with "road" use. Worse case, maybe your loosing compression on one engine cylinder when at running temperature ? (Do your water pipes pressurise when the engine is under load?) Did you have the fuel filter changed during your service? Maybe your fuel pump is getting tired, how are your ht leads looking? Maybe a boost leak from your inlet or y pipe on the intercooler( would be areas I would double check)

The fuel filter looks almost brand new. Regarding the other stuff I shall have a good root around at the weekend and see if anything stands out. Cheers for your help

Are those 30mins in heavy traffic? Constant stop-go type situation. If so, it's likely what you're experiencing is heat soak.

As i'm from Singapore, it's always over 30 deg celsius in the afternoons year round and being stuck in traffic, you do feel the car significantly more sluggish.

But i don't have much of an issue if it's 30mins of highway cruising where there's airflow into the engine bay.

Yes it is in the constant start stop type situations. But to be fair that's the only type of driving I have done so far so can not compare the two yet.

Stop start will cause inlet temps to rise. To give you an example, on a run my inlet temp will sit about 3-4 degree above ambient. If im stop start i can see temps rise to over 25degree above ambient. Thats an 06. Sti top mount

Stop start traffic and top mounts don't mix very well

If it only runs slightly sluggish in stop go traffic and it just feels overall down on response and power (and not hesitating or sputtering) then i'm pretty sure it's just heatsoak.

Good info Gambit! How was the temps mesured? Guessing it's from something like an Ecutek EasyECU software?

Psi3 data monitor - ecu has an inlet temp parameter you can display on screen

Well, I took her for a longer drive this weekend mostly B roads for an hour or two and she showed no signs of power loss etc in fact it was a pleasure and smiles all the way, so I'm pretty confident it was heat soak. It is worth lagging or a turbo blanket etc or getting an uprated TMIC as most of my driving is town based?
