Default 96 wrx engine refresh

ok guys, bought a wrx wagon which isnt in bad nick all round but the engine is tired, having done around the 100k mark, not knocking or anything but has piston slap and generally looking a bit rough round the edges.

whats the cheapest way of refreshing it to the point where it no longer has the slap and is as near to being a fresh engine as possible without spending RCM kind of money.

not looking to upgrade in anyway, just want a standard motor.

thanks in advance.

Piston slap will be due to wear on the bores and pistons - the only longterm cure is to rebore to suit oversize pistons and rings.
The heads will probably want a refurb at that mileage too.
Crank journals will need measuring and if in spec, crank can be reused with fresh big end and mains.
Oil pump will need stripping and the gear set and pump body measuring to determine wear.
IMHO at that mileage, even a standard build/re-fresh wont be cheap - you will have to factor in the cost of the gaskets, seals and O-rings, cambelt/tensioner/idlers, water pump and possibly a clutch too while the engine is out.

So what sort of money would I be looking at for standard rebuild as above and would there be a huge difference if I used forged internals instead of standard??
