blob exhaust

Can anyone tell me the size of a standard exhaust. Is it 2.5 - 2.75 or something else

This does sound a bit daft but would a 2.5 fit onto a 2.75 with out any issues. Asking as I have a centre pipe minus the silence which is 2.75 wanted to know if this would slot inbetween the rest which is 2.5.
