Default Best Turbo?..

Good Morninggents,

Go easy onme as my knowledge on turbos is limited.

I amcurrently running an MD321- I think T, might be V on a closed deck centrethrust 2ltr with various goodies, pistons, rods, bearings, pullies, crank etc.

Anyway, regardless of peoples opinions on too much power etc, as we could be here allday, I would like peoples opinions on turbos and importantly cost please.

I want totipple into the 500bhp + club and also have an eye out for the 6speedconversion needed.

Also on thecards is to reverse the manifold, as I believe this will help reduce lag. My injectorswill need upgrading and a bigger fuel pump no doubt – again, information onthese much appreciated.

Isthere anything else I will need?

Also, external wastegates… they sound epic and are rare on imprezas… Expensive job?

Thecar is a MY99 STI Type R

Going rotated is expensive but power delivery is so different, as in much more aggressive and brutal compared to a standard position turbo.

Something like a garrett gt3076 will to the job for 500bhp but means you will need a rotated up and down pipe pipe and external gate, total if you pick the bits up second hand £700 for the turbo £200-250 ewg, rotated kit £500-700 and additional bits £250

I should just start in boxing you with these questions really Banny, ha

Thanks for the info, its appreciated. So just to clarify, said turbo is good for the power I am after, if I want to fit it as a none rotated, second hand, we are looking at around 950 + Labour, however to rotate, its + another 750-950 ish? Again, plus labour.

Doesn’t sound as bad as I thought actually.

I thought a 321V was supposed to be a 500+bhp capable turbo.
Even a T with a drop of methanol will see you around the 480 mark, of course with appropriate supporting mods.

If you already have a 321T then talk to Lateral performance, they can upgrade it to the latest billet spec which will do 500 with meth, or perhaps convert it to a billet V which could see 500 on Vpower

To the OP:
reversing the inlet manifold WILL reduce lag but according to Harvey (RIP) it's minimal and not worth the work. I read an extensive post on the matter from last year which basically said that if it's mapped properly the length of the tubing from turbo through FMIC to normal inlet manifold is insignifiicant due to the the flow rate and air consumption of the engine on load.

Also, I know you mentioned external wastegates, is there any chance you meant screamer pipes? Can be confusing as they're described/called similar things.

Paul.

Hi Paul,

Interesting post thanks, I have a lot to think about now.

It was a screamer pipe I was refering to yes, thanks for clarifying. Do you have much experience with them?

ps Rbon91 - thanks, been noted.
THanks,

How does a rotated twin scroll GTX3076 0.64 A/R respond on a JDM STI 2003??? Is it laggy compared to other 500bhp stock location turbos?
