Doubts about buying a scoob
Hey all,
i am lurking around here for a while now. Spend time on several Scooby meetings (in germany) and talked to many people about scoobys and power in general.
My initial plans were to buy a JDM Blobeye STi. Plans have changed a few month ago to get an Spec C version. But after talking to some tuners and modders im a bit concerned about the power output a Spec C can achieve and if that is enough for me.
My long term goal is: A fast daily car which can crush porsches and similiar cars on our autobahn. Budget is initial about 10.000 GBP. And over the next 3 years another 7.500 GBP for modding.
My Background: A 420hp BPU Supra MKIV which i sold 2 years ago.
I !know! that you cant really compare both cars. 4 door awd "modern" daily cruiser against a 17 year old rwd power beast. BUT regardless i need help choosing
What my concerns about the scooby are:
Power. With my long term budget of +- 17.000 GBP i dont think that i can achieve power levels, a cheap BPU supra can. Autobahn wise! Not talking about track. I´ve read alot about engine tuning and scoobies and think, that a steady 420 bhp setup is possible on a spec c.
Based to several dyno charts i have seen from modded Scoobys (Example: http://www.powerstation.org.uk/stage4.pdf) where a Spec C "only" got 380 bhp and 225 awhp. What buggers me is the 225 awhp. Compared to a stock supra (300 rwhp).
So my question would be:
Does a modded scooby in my price region realy only achieve about 230 awhp? (Without opening/strenghten the engine to get more power).

As far as what you can get depends what you want, do you want it to be full on hard core or comfortable but goes like ****?
500bhp classic is easily achievable with 17k

Hey Tidgy,
thanks for your awesome post!
300 awhp would be enough for me. The car will mostly spend time on normal streets and cities.
It needs to be a mixture of comfi and power. I think at the end i will sacrifice power for a more comfi car. Damn i need to test drive a 400bhp scooby here :/ Not a classic, but a 2.0 Blob STi

I went form a 528 bmw + classic to a hawkeye wrx, very good medium, especialy given the new one is 70bhp and 100ftlb more power lol.
For road my choice would still be a forged 2.5 up to around 400-450. For long high speed runs front mount is a must but will need alot of other mods to get there, brakes suspension etc etc.
wrx will be cheaper to buy and if you end up sacking off alot of the sti's components anyway then you wont save anything by starting with an sti. Exception maybe the gearbox.
17k is a healthy budget to get to the that stage, buying the car and the engine rebuild will be the biggest costs.

i dont think you will get anywhere near the same power from an impreza and supra with the same budget, Supra engines are nuts when it comes to modding.... Also, get some pics up of your old supra

I'm really not sure it's worth getting a Scooby if you're after a top end monster for the straights.
If however you're after something to rinse people from the lights and travel point to point very fast, the Scooby is your car.

Hi, I think you might struggle to get a spec c for £10k, you will just about get a nice JDM STI for that though.
As above, front mount and oil cooler are essential if your planning on long high speed journeys.
SPEC C'S do sometimes come up in your budget very rarely though and both jdm sti's and spec c's sell very quickly so you will have to move fast.
I would seriously consider a WRX with your intentions as you will be junking almost all the STI parts bar the gear box and interior and £17k will build a monster if you start with a £3k blob wrx £5k will easilly get you a built 2.1 stroker engine capable of 550 bhp and maybe some change left over, with the other £2k for the box, then you can use the other £7k for suspension, brakes, ecu, turbo, fmic and oil cooler with change for an sti interior if thats what you want.

I always thought the whole point of a Scooby was point to point ability not straight line autobahn storming.Completely the wrong car to start with if that is your goal.

Agreed with the above sentiments, Newage scoobies have the aerodynamics of a house boat, although I think the hawk STI gear box is capable of significantly more than 160mph, no doubt banny sti will pop along shortly and tell us exactly how much more.
OP's Supra was much more suited to high speed, I also think I've read somewhere that when the scoob gets to circa 170mph it hits a wall in terms of air flow and is effectively sucked backwards which requires a stupid amount of bhp to take it beyond that and towards 200bhp, many of the top tuners have had issues with high speed stability Andy F being the one that springs to mind.
