What's the normal oil usage in the 2.5 roughly ? Topped up today for the first time in over 3k miles an had to put in just over a ltr. It is hard to read the oil due to the design of the dip stick but what's everyone's opinion on this? Is a ltr a 1000 miles the norm? I mainly do short journeys but on these I always warm up and cool down, in fact it usually doesn't get warm enough for a blast

Are you saying you have used a litre in 3000 miles, if so thats good for a 2.5, if its a litre every 1000 miles your at the top end of Subaru's quoted acceptable usege, which i think is a bit of an **** covering figure to cover warranty claims.
What oil are you using 5w30w, 10w40w etc ?

I used prob just over 2 ltrs. I'm usin 10 40 , engine had a full hg an updated arps back in aug so that was when it last had a fill up. I do check it reg but it's hard to be accurate with the dip stick.

I wouldn't be concerned about that oil usage. that's one of the best I've seen & I see allot

This is about how much (maybe not quite) my Hawk STi Spec D is using. I check mine a few times a week though.

With regard to the level showing on the dipstick :

Park the car somewhere flat overnight.
In the morning, pull out the dipstick and leave it out for at least 5 minutes.

I twist the piece of kitchen roll I've just used to wipe the dipstick pop it in the top of the dipstick hole to avoid anything going down there whilst waiting.

What happens is that oil get trapped around the inside of the dipstick tube and once you pull it out before starting it, it lets the oil residue run down the tube (it's not much) back into the engine.

Then dip the stick in.

The level may look odd in that where the oil shows on the dipstick is like a V shape.

I always judge mine where the two sides of the V meet at the bottom : V

You need to be at F and no more, don't go near the notch.

When you do this what is the preferable outside temperature?

Would I be able to do this wearing my new onesie?

What if the letter X appears rather than the V, will i have to abort the check and try again the next day?

you think thats **** covering? SEAT with the 1.4tsi ibiza cupra reckon that 1 litre every 600 miles is acceptable !!

Since I did my oil change in September last year,not moved still just below the max after nearly 3k, running 5/40 millers full syth.

I think some on here may know what I'm saying, the oil can form a V shape on the dipstick.

I get my spec d serviced once a year at the scoob dealer who puts in whatever the recommended oil is. Ive never needed to top it up in between services. Doing about 7k miles per year & had this car for 2 years now. Oil level checked every fortnight.

Some say that a sudden increase in oil consumption is a worrying sign. I'm not sure about the validity of that statement from what I understand about the way these things work but a few thousand miles after my old Hawkeye got through three litres in four thousand miles the head gaskets went. It had barely used oil before that, maybe half a litre every five thousand or so.

60,000miles 1st service at 1000 then 10,000 and every 10,000 after that. When its due a service its always about 1/4 inch above the min marker. All dealer servicing running 5/30 fully synthetic. The car was running 95 ron standard till 5 tanks of tesco 99 then few mods and remap been on 282bhp since 34,000. BTW bought a litre of 5/30 fully synthetic 5 years ago for top ups never used it and don't even know where it is now. I was under the impression that the 2.5s run very tight piston to bore tolerences and would be low on oil consumpion.

I'd do an oil change every 5,000 miles if i were you mate, for what it costs and how long it takes, it's money well spent, 10,000 miles on a subaru is pushing your luck.

I always check my level with a warm engine, seem to get a far more accurate reading as the oil is thinner, you just need to be sure it is right up to the maximum as it will read higher when warm.

Very wise words. They're very highly stressed engines oil is pretty much the most important part of it. I would recommend changing it at least every 5000.

I'm currently changing it on mine every three months. I think the 6000 recommended for this engine is too long.

When I check my oil, the reading is always different on the front and back of the dipstick? Which one do I go with - the higher or the lower - any tips?
Incidentally, I probabaly get through close to a litre every 1k miles.

Change mine every 6k, if you use quality oil and filter, IE OEM filter and I use Millers oil it will be fine.
