On my previous car water used to get into the speed sensor and it would be erratic then die, have you done any work on it recently? Could have just knocked a cable off somewhere?

as its a import id have a look behind the clocks to see if the mph converter is all ok, maybe a wire has come off.

My thoughts too that it could be the converter that's gone **** up, that or the sender

Check the sender first. Wet weather can get into them, esp with salt.
